This semester I'm taking an Intro to Operating Systems course, along with my Java and MySQL.. We're using Guide to Operating Systems by Michael Palmer. I can't tell you much about it, as I have yet to open it.. but that's what college is suggesting, so it may be worth a shot?

Hope this helps,
-Jason

I would say it depends on what you want to learn about operating systems or what operating system.
