This annoying as heck error keeps coming up whenever I try to install the 64 bit version of itunes (UPDATE: This is effecting other programs too, like Photoshop!)
.. it says:

msiexec.exe - Bad Image (window title)

C:\Windows\AppAtch\AppPatch64\ACGenral.DLL is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.

Does msiexec.exe hint that it may have to do with Internet Explorer?

Hello Jir and and welcome to Geeks To Go. :)

I am jwang01 and I will be assisting you with your issue.

When we get to working on your computer you may want to print out or save my respones in notepad because there may be times were you will not be able to access them here.

Also, please don't attach your logs unless asked, as they can make them hard to read. Just post them as a reply.

I'm not seeing any malware in your logs. Is the bad image error the only problem you are having?

I think the error is saying that there is a problem with both msiexec.exe and ACgGenral.DLL. I tried replacing the files with working ones, but it wouldn't allow me..

And yes, this is the only error so far I have encountered with compatability. Good to hear that there is no malware though.

Hello,

Ok, let's do this. Let's try and replace that file and see if that fixes the problem. I also want to run one more malware scanner to confirm that you are indeed clean of malware. :)

You can also go ahead and delete the file off your desktop as I don't think its the right one.

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :OTL
    PRC - C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe (Microsoft Corporation)

    :Services

    :Reg

    :Files
    C:\Windows\AppPatch\AppPatch64\AcGenral.dll|C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-a..ence-mitigations-c3_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_68192a650bfba522\AcGenral.dll /replace

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
  • OTL will open a log, please post that here in your next reply.

Next

Using Internet Explorer or Firefox, visit Kaspersky Online Scanner

1. Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.

2. To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan. Click HERE to see how to disable the most common antivirus programs.
3. Click Run at the Security prompt.

The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
Please be patient as this can take quite a long time to download.
  • Once the update is complete, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, adware, dialers, and other riskware
    • Archives
    • E-mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View report... at the bottom.
  • Click the Save report... button.

    Posted Image

  • Change the Files of type dropdown box to Text file (.txt) and name the file KasReport.txt to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply

Please post the logs of OTL and Kaspersky in your next reply.

Hello,

Looks like you got a couple mp3 files infected from downloading audio from Limewire. I am going to remove those files, and I highly recommend removing Limewire from your system as it generates a security risk.

Then I am going to give you the all clear from malware and give you a couple of other steps to complete. After you do that, I suggest you head back over to the thread you created in the Windows Vista/Windows 7 forum and let them know you are clean of malware, but the problems still exists. I think they may be able to help you a little better over there with this. :)

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :OTL
    PRC - C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe (Microsoft Corporation)

    :Services

    :Reg

    :Files
    C:\Users\Owner\Documents\LimeWire\Saved\Limewire Tunes\danielle brisebois (unreleased live record).mp3
    C:\Users\Owner\Documents\LimeWire\Saved\Limewire Tunes\stern sirius august 19 2009.mp3

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done

Then

Congratulations!! Your logs look clean! :)

Now we need to do a little house keeping and remove the tools we have used.

  • Click on OTL.exe
  • Click the Clean It button
  • If it tells you to reboot click Yes

Now the next list is some programs I like to recommend to people to help keep your computer safer. Keep in mind that these are all optional.

MalwareBytes Anti Malware
This is an exellent On Access Anti-Malware Scanner.

SuperAntiSpyware
This is an Anti-Spyware program that will help protect your PC with Real Time Protection. You should have one Anti-Spyware program that scans in real time. This will help prevent your PC from picking up any more malware.

TFC
This will help delete all temporary files.

Firefox
This is an alternative for Internet Explorer. Firefox is a more secure internet browser.

You should also make sure Windows is up to date. You can simply go to Start and go to Windows Update to find out. I would recommend turning on Automatic Updates.

Heres how to do it:

  • Go to Start
  • Click on the Control Panel
  • Click on Security
  • Then click on Windows update
  • Then settings to turn Windows Update On/Off

You should check and make sure that you keep your Anti-Virus up to date. This is also a crucial part of your security. You can do this by clicking on your Anti-Virus and clicking on update. If your AV has an automatic update feature, i would recommend turning it on in the settings menu.

And finally a little Posted Image How did I get infected in the first place ? (by Mr. Tony Klein)

Good luck and safe surfing :)
