I own a Gateway MT6840 Laptop. I was looking for an inexpensive speed upgrade so I figured ram would be a good department. I am a little standoffish because I'm not really sure which compatibilities I need to look out for. If someone could just give me a quick heads up on what will or will not work I'd very very appreciative. Or If someone even had some suggestions on some products in particular that would be great!

here are the specs: MT6840

Thanks

Hello MrFreenee.... Welcome to GeeksToGo, :) :) :)

I'm sorry to hear about your issue. We will try to help you resolve this as soon as possible.
Please understand we are all volunteers and we are not here all the time. Sometimes it may be a extended amount of time to get back to you. If it has been more then 3 days please shoot me a PM and I will try to get back to you quickly then.

Go to HERE and run the Crucial online scanner.
This will give you the exact memory configuration for your system.
You do not have to buy the memory from there, but write down the information and if you need assistance in purchasing the upgrade memory GTG can assist with suggestions also.

I had a chance to read over the stats and this is what I got: MT6840.

I'm honestly not sure what I should be looking for in compatibility. If anyone could fill me in or suggestion some products, I'd be very appreciative.

TigerDirect list of acceptable memory modules for your system
NewEgg with the same list preferences.

Any of the modules in either list above will be compatible.
Now if it was me, I would stay with either Crucial. Corsair,OCZ. Kingston

Both of those models appear to be intended for desktops. I'm trying to upgrade my laptop. Is that going to make a difference?

Hi Mrfeenee

It would make a huge difference with a laptop.

I believe this is what Rshaffer61 was trying to link to-->> HERE

This is only one product I found... Just make sure if you choose any other brand that it is only the brand or the size\amount of ram is what is changing... Everything else is specific to your laptop.

I personally would get 4gb of ram if I were you but that is personal preference

Good luck
