Hi

Recently I've been having problems booting up, I get a blank screen and when I reset it I have to choose 'Last known good configuration' (XP) to get it to start. Is there anything I can do to find out why this is happening? I've run AVG, Spybot and Adaware, I'm all clean.

Any ideas?

hmm, looks like a file that is nessasary for windows to boot up is gone! but xp has a feature called repair installation, what you should do is enter in the windows xp disk at your boot up, and from the menu select repair installation and follow the instructions from there, hopefully it should fix ur problem <_<

Hi Sox

Tried the XP disk, the only option it gave me was to reset to factory settings, which I presume would wipe everything I have???

basically, more like the settings you have for things like your browsers and mailing accounts and other stuff that you set when your computer came to you, what you can try is to get into safe mode and then run a Hijackthis log for us

Reboot in safe mode (by tapping F8 at startup and select safe mode from the menu).
then after you get into safe mode
Let us take a closer look at what is running on your PC. We'll need you to use a free diagnostic tool (HiJackThis) and post a log back here with the results.

Click the HijackThis Guide in my signature, download it and follow the instructions in the guide.

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, DO NOT delete or modify anything yet! Someone will be along to tell you what steps to take after you post the contents of the scan results.

Hi Sox

Appreciate the help, I'm reluctant to reset factory settings, it was [bleep] trying to get SP1 on 56k dial-up, I don't think I would have the heart to reset all settings either having just set everything up for firefox and thunderbird <_< so if there is another way....

here's my HJT log
