Hello.
I am trying to remove Hotbar from my system. I have tried using Norton AntiVirus 2009 and Ad-Aware Free. Both reported that problems were detected and removed/fixed but that is not completely correct. There are pieces of Hotbar remaining. So I came to this site. But, first, I need to ask a question about the process described in the Malware and Spyware Cleaning Guide. I have
1. cleaned temp file with TFC;
2. run ERUNT;
3. run MBAM;
4. rebooted.
The same symptoms persisited, so I continued to Step Four: Rootkit Detection. I ran GMER. Actually, that's the issue right now. I did not note the precise time that I started GMER but, more than 5 hours later, with the scan still going on, I stopped it. Furthermore, after that I had some problems with my computer. It wouldn't respond to Ctrl-Alt-Del, nor would it shut down in the usual way. I had to manually turn it off.
So, my questions:
Is GMER supposed to take that long to do a scan? (My HD is 140GB, about half full.)
Could GMER have been the cause of the problems before I manually shut it off?
If it is not unusual for GMER to run for such a long time then I will run it again and will wait until it is done. Then I will run OTL and post the OTL results as well as those of MBAM and GMER.
However, before I begin again, I need to know if what I am doing is correct and not unusual.
Thank you.

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

Vista and Windows 7 users:
1. These tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe) every time you run them
2. With Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

Then I will run OTL and post the OTL results as well as those of MBAM and GMER.

:)

Until just a few minutes ago, there have been no repeated symptoms, nor notifications by my anti-virus/malware software. A few minutes ago, Norton AV 2009 reported 11 Hotbar issues. Supposedly, now the problem has been fixed. Supposedly.

idtate,
I don't understand your reply at all. I don't see the connection to what I wrote earlier about my problem. Could you elaborate a little, please.

OK, let me try again.
I think, at least at this point, is the running time for GMER.
That is why, before I went ahead and did anything else, I posted

Is GMER supposed to take that long to do a scan? (My HD is 140GB, about half full.)
Could GMER have been the cause of the problems before I manually shut it off?

However, before I begin again, I need to know if what I am doing is correct and not unusual.

So, any ideas? Thanks.

GMER can take a long time to run but if it errors out, move on to the next part.

My run of GMER lasted over 5 hours and it did not error out - I stopped it.
If 5 hours does not seem excessive then I might run GMER overnight to give it sufficient time to finish.
Does the 5 hours seem excessive or is that time not unusual?

It shouldn't take more them 30 minutes.
Move on to the next parts.

Tried GMER again and had to stop manually after almost 4 hours. As mentioned before, after stopping GMER I had to manually shut down my computer. So, after a reboot, I ran OTL. I am including three files:
1. the mbam log file
2. OTL
3. Extras
I hope they mean something to you and I can finally get rid of Hotbar.
Thanks.

The Hotbar issue is located in your FireFox extensions

FF - HKLM\software\mozilla\Firefox\extensions\\[email protected]: C:\Program Files\Hotbar\bin\11.0.78.0\firefox\extensions

The usual method for uninstalling extensions and themes is by using the Add-ons manager for your Mozilla application, as follows.

Click "Tools -> Add-ons (Add-on Manager in SeaMonkey 2)
Click on the Extensions or Themes button on the top.
Click on the extension or theme you want to uninstall.
Click Uninstall.
Restart your Mozilla application.

Thanks for the quick reply.
Unfortunately, I still don't see what needs to be done because, in Firefox,
1. the only Extensions that are displayed are
Java Quick Starter 1.0
Microsoft .NET Framework Assistant 1.1
Norton IPS 1.0
2. The only Theme is
Default 3.5.5
Does any of this mean something to you?

Is hotbar listed in add/remove programs?

1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove if listed:

Not any more.
Right after I realized my error in installing Hotbar I went to Add/Remove, found it and deleted it. I thought/hoped that would be the end of it. It wasn't.

Double click on the OTL icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

:Reg
[HKLM\software\mozilla\Firefox\extensions]
"Hotbar"=-

:Files
C:\Program Files\Hotbar\bin\11.0.78.0\firefox\extensions
%PROGRAMFILES%\Hotbar

:Commands
[purity]
[emptytemp]
[CREATERESTOREPOINT]
[resethosts]

Then click the Run Fix button at the top
Let the program run unhindered, it wont take long.

OK. Did that. Had to reboot and after restarting the following file was created.
Does it tell you anything?
