Hi there,
I originally found your website as I was searching for ad redirects from Google. I did all the steps for the Malware and Spyware Cleaning Guide and encountered an issue when I ran Avast! When I did the full scan, it said there were zero infected files. However, during the scan, a pop up window opened saying that I had 12 "threats" and that I needed to reboot to have these "threats" cleaned up. Well, I rebooted, but my computer didn't reboot unless I used the same settings as the last known reboot. By the way, I could be messing up all these terms as I am not very good with my computer...sorry about that!! So, I got back into Avast! to see if those "threats" were cleaned up, but there is no record of these "threats". So I don't know if they were cleaned up or not.

Here are the logs.

Might have been SuperAntiSpyware that found something since it will look over Avast's shoulder so to speak when it scans files and it looks more for spyware than viruses. Did you check their log?

Anyway, it looks like whatever is plugged into F:\ is (was) infected. Do the following:

Copy the text between the lines of stars by highlighting and Ctrl + c.

******************************************************************
reg.exe delete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MountPoints2" /f

**********************************************************************

Start, Run, cmd, OK to bring up a new Command Prompt window. Rightclick and select Paste and the above text should appear. Make sure you got it all and then hit Enter.

Close the Command Prompt window.

Download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs
http://download.blee...Disinfector.exe
and save it to your desktop.

* Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
* The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
* Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
* Reboot your computer when done.

Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection.

Once you have done the above then with F:\ connected, right click on it and have Avast scan it. There is a file

F:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-1482476501-1644491937-682003330-1013\dir32.exe that is definitely bad.

If Avast doesn't find it you should manually delete it.

Run:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
:!: If you have a previous version of MalwareBytes', remove it via Add or Remove Programs and download a fresh copy. :!:

http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

SAVE Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
* The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
* Post that log back here.

Download but do not yet run ComboFix
:!: If you have a previous version of Combofix.exe, delete it and download a fresh copy. :!:

:!: It must be saved to your desktop, do not run it :!:

:!: Disable your Antivirus software when downloading or running Combofix. If it has Script Blocking features, please disable these as well. See: http://www.bleepingc...opic114351.html

Download and Rename this file -- (call it george.exe ) to your Desktop -- from either of these two sources:
http://download.blee...Bs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe

Doubleclick on george to start the program.

* :!: Important: Have no other programs running. Your Task Bar should be clear of any program entries including your Browser.

* A window may open with a series of Disclaimers. Accept the Disclaimers to start the fix. Allow it to install the Recovery Console then Continue. When the scan completes Notepad will open with with your results log open. Do a File, Exit and answer 'Yes' to save changes.

A caution - Do not run Combofix more than once. Do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed, as this may cause the process to stall or your computer to lock. The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop. Even when ComboFix appears to be doing nothing, look at your Drive light. If it is flashing, Combofix is still at work.

A file will be created at => C:\Combofix.txt. I'll need to see that in your reply.

Re-activate your protection programs at this time :!:

Reboot now, please :!:

Post Back (copy/paste the .txt files, do not use attachments)
After following the above, post back with:

1.Contents of C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

2. Contents of C:\Combofix.txt;

Hi Ron! Thanks for your post!! I didn't get very far. After I downloaded and ran the Flash_Disinfector.exe all that happened was a window popped up with "Done" in the message, but it was really fast. It didn't seem like anything in my F drive was scanned. Well, then I rebooted and moved on the scanning F with Avast. Then an error message from Avast popped up which said "Unable to start scan. There are no more endpoints from the endpoint mapper." How can i fix this error in Avast? Also, Avast is saying that my system is "unsecured" and "The Avast! Antivirus program has been stopped, or is in an inconsistent state. Please re-start the program to resume protecting your system." However, when I click on the "fix now" and the "start program" now buttons provided, nothing happens. Can you tell me how I can fix these problems in avast?

Thanks so much!

Go ahead and run MalwareBytes AM and Combofix. We'll worry about avast later.

Hi Ron....
Ok...I went ahead and ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Mailware and Combofix. When I ran Combofix, it told me that Avast! was running, but I went through all the screens in Avast! and disabled everything. Combofix ran anyway, and I didn't seem to have any problems (hopefully). Also, that infected fle in F: was never deleted by Avast!. Do I just delete it using the "delete" button???

Anyway, here are the logs... Oh! And Thanks again!!

Try Avast again. If it still doesn't want to work then uninstall it and reinstall.

You can delete the file manually.

There are some strange desktop.ini files on your system. I want to see what they are up to so:

Start, Run, cmd, OK to open a command windfow. Type:

cd "\Documents and Settings\admin\Application Data"

notepad desktop.ini

Then copy the text by highlighting and Ctrl + c and start a reply then paste it in with Ctrl + v.

You can then close notepad and the command window.

Did you get Avast to run?

The desktop.ini file is harmless.

Hi Ron,
Thanks again for all your help! My system is running much better since you started helping me! :)

I was able to uninstall the bad version of avast! that I had and load it again. It seems to be working fine now. I re-scanned the F: drive and avast! didn't find that infected file, so I had to delete it manually from my computer. Hopefully I did it correctly!

I still have other issues going on with my computer system, mainly setting up a wireless network including wireless printers. Hopefully I'll find what I need to get going to resolve those issues on another forum.

You are awesome!!!

Thanks SO, SO much!

We need to clean up System Restore. Follow Jim's procedure here:
http://forum.aumha.o...581099691bf108f

You do not have the latest Java. Get the latest at:

http://www.java.com/...nload/index.jsp

Once you install it, go into Control Panel, Add/Remove Software and remove any old versions (which may call themselves: Java Runtime, Runtime Environment, Runtime, JRE, Java Virtual Machine, Virtual Machine, Java VM, JVM, VM, J2RE, J2SE) I see:

Java™ 6 Update 11
Java™ 6 Update 3

Also make sure you have the latest versions of any adobe.com products you use like Shockwave, Flash or Acrobat. Adobe is fond of foisting GetPlus on you. You can let them install it and then afterwards, go into Control Panel, Add/Remove Software and remove it. It probably doesn't hurt to leave it but I don't see the need for it and it has caused problems in the past.

Whether you use adobe reader, acrobat or fox-it to read pdf files you need to disable Javascript in the program. There is an exploit out there now that can use it to get on your PC. For Adobe Reader: Start, All Programs, Adobe Reader, Edit, Preferences, Click on Javascript in the left column and uncheck Enable Acrobat Javascript. OK Close program. It's the same for Foxit reader except you uncheck Enable Javascript Actions. So far as I know there is only one legitimate user of javascript in pdf files and that's the IRS so you may have to turn it on for them but otherwise leave it off.

I am fond of a little program called winpatrol. It sits in your systray and warns you if something tries to make changes. http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html then download WinPatrol 2010 The free version is fine.

What exactly are you trying to do with wireless? One of my other hats is "network engineer" so I might be able to help you there. They don't seem to mind if I get off topic on this forum.

Hello again,
I'll go ahead and update Java and Adobe, etc. Thanks!

Regarding the wireless networking, wow, you are a man of many talents! I am having problems setting up a wireless laptop and a wireless printer. I started to go through the procedures from the other page but I haven't finished it yet..as I was trying to get my system cleaned up first. I currently have a PC and Mac with LAN and a wireless Mac, laptop and printer. Both the wireless laptop and printer are not connecting to the wireless network.

Thanks again for everything, Ron!! :)

Not so sure I can help you with the MAC but I'll read up on it. The networking is the same but the programs they use are different.

Thanks Ron. Actually, I'm only having problems with my wireless Windows Laptop and my wireless printer. The Macs seem to be working ok.

What model printer? Are you using encryption on the wireless?

Hi Ron,
Sorry for the delayed reply. My kids were playing games on my computer all weekend. :):)
The printer is a Brother MFC-490CW. when you say Encryption, are you asking if the network password protected? If so, then yes, there is an encryption. Sorry, but I am really computer illiterate. :)

Thanks,
Jill
