Ok, I always wanted to build a computer so I decided to do it. I bought all the parts and put it together. I powered up the computer and I got a message saying.

Bad Bios checksum......Starting Bios recovery
cheching for floppy
floppy not found
checking for cd rom
cd rom not found

so, I rechecked my connections, same message. In the manual it says if i get the message above to pop in the cd that came with the moderboard. Ok, I did that and a message says to turn off the computer and turn it on again. I did that and now I just get a black screen................what the [bleep] is wrong now. I am so fustrated...........

Please someone help me...........

OK don't panic! Follow these instructions closely though.

1. Disconnect all the drive cabling from the motherboard (ie floppy, hard drive & CDROM). Also remove the power to the hard drive.

2. Remove any pci cards you have, leaving only the video card.

3. Locate the clear cmos jumper & clear it for about 10 secs. If you don't know what I mean, tell me & I'll explain.

4. Make sure the system speaker is connected to the front panel header on the mobo & power up the system.

Let me know what happens

Thank you for your reply. I will try it as soon as i get home. I really hope this works. I contacted ASUS and they said I might have to remove the BIOS chip and mail it to them to be reflashed. I really don't wanna do that............

You should only need to send the bios chip away if it was faulty to start with. Nothing you have done, as far as I can tell, would cause the chip to require reflashing or replacing.

If they are on about a bios update to a higher version, then you can do this yourself without having to remove the chip. A bios update shouldn't be necessary just to get the system to boot up however.

Ok, I followed what you told me and it worked. Now the message I am getting is.

Radeon 9250 VGA Bios
Floppy not found
CD Rom not found

does this mean that I have to update the bios for the video card?

No, the error messages are nothing to do with the video card. So far the vid card seems fine.
The messages you are getting are only due to the fact that you disconnected the floppy & CDROM drives.

Carry out the next few steps one at a time ie complete one step then boot up the system & make sure everythings OK. Please remember to disconnect the power lead from the back of the PSU before each stage.

1. Reconnect the floppy drive cable. The power lead should already be connected to it but if not, reconnect this also. The floppy cable must be inserted the right way. If you look closely at the floppy cable port on the mobo you should see that one end is marked with a number 1. The cable must be inserted so that the side with the red stripe down it, is at the pin 1 end of the socket.
The same applies to the connection on the floppy drive - the red stripe lines up with the end marked 1.

When you have done this & booted up, the 'floppy not found' error should disappear.

2. Reconnect the hard drive cable & the drives power cable. When you power on, go into the bios & make sure the drive has been detected correctly.

3. Reconnect the CDROM drive. The 'no CDROM' error message should disappear on boot up.


I don't know if your hard drive is serial ata (SATA) or standard IDE. If its standard IDE, then make sure the hard drive jumper is set to Master and is connected to the primary IDE port. The CDROM should then be set to Master also & connected to the secondary IDE port.
NB Your drive cables should both have 3 connectors each (normally blue, grey & black). For each cable : The blue must connect to the motherboard. The master drive must be connected to the black connected (opposite end of cable). The grey connector in the middle is for slave drives only.

If you have serial ata hard drive instead or more than one CD drive, let me know.

Let me know how you get on. If you have a problem at any stage, then tell me before you carry out the next stage.

If you have serial ata drive then, connect it up to the first (SATA 1) port. The CDROM drive is set up the way I described earlier.

Well I went home and did everything you told me to do but I had the same problem. I had in to sticks of 512 mb of memory. One of them were new and the other I bought used to save some money. For some reason I took the used one out and power up again and WOW, Everything was good to go. I am really thankful for you for putting up with me over the past days. You are the best could of done it with out you.

Re. your memory problem - check to see if the two sticks are the same type.
If you are running the ram in dual channel mode, then they really need to be identical, ideally same manufacturer & everything.

Yes, they were from the same manufacter and had the same specs. I guess I will just buy a new one.
