Hi,

I hope this is the right place to post. I'll try to describe my problem as accurately as I can. First, my OS is Win xp, sp 3. I used to have Norton (Symantec) but switched to NOD32 (ESET) sometime ago. Recently, I noticed I still had a Symantec folder which I decided to delete :) , and I strongly suspect that deleting that folder now prevents me to connect to my client's databse. Pointing in that direction is the fact that, when I try to reinstall the Contivity program for the connection, I get this error message:

C:\PROGRA~1\Symantec\S32EVNT1.DLL. Failed to install the DLL for an unstable device pilot. (translated from French as accuratly as possible).

Would anyone have a suggestion?

Thanks!

Go to Norton's site and download then run Norton Removal Tool that is appropriate for your version of Norton's you had. Let us know if it works for you.

Thanks for the advice!

My problem is that I think my last version of Norton AV was 2002 (if not 2001; I never upgraded after that), and there is no link for that version. Should I use the Uninstaller for the 2003 product?

Hi,

Unfortunately, I get the same message when I try to install the contivity program on my desktop computer. :)

I suspect I need that dll file. Actually, I read another thread where something similar was mentioned in the geekstogo forum for malware and viruses: http://www.geekstogo...l=symantec file

Specifics: The Contivity program used to connect to the client's intranet is already installed on my laptop. Everything runs perfect when I connect to the client's intranet, but then I can't get to the address I am looking for (http://xxx/index.php, because Firefox is looking for www.xxx.com instead. I thought it might be a redirect problem, but that would be the only instance of redirect I get, and when I try with IE, I get the usual blank error page saying I may not be connected to the Net. :)

Well lets take a look another way.
Download Autoruns from the link in my signature below:
1: Extract the Autoruns Zip file contents to a folder.
2: Double-click the "Autoruns.exe".
3: Click on the "Everything" tab
4: Remove any entries that mention "File Not Found" by right-clicking the entry and select Delete.
5: Go to File then to Export As or Save in some versions.
6: Save AutoRuns.txt file to known location like your Desktop.
7: Attach to your next reply.

Done. However, one file could not be deleted: mbr.sys

Here is a rough translation from French of the corresponding error message:

Error deleting start setting: the specified service does not exist as an installed service.

The log is attached. :)

OK Autoruns isn't showing anything for this issue. Trying another way now.
Lets see what you have in your startup
Please click on
Start and then on Run
Type in msconfig and then press Enter
Now click on Startup
Next click on your Print Screen on your keyboard. It is normally the key above your number pad between the F12 key and the Scroll Lock key
Now go to Start
All Programs
Accessories
Paint

In the empty white area click and hold the CTRL key and then click the V
Go to the File option at the top and click on Save As
Save as file type JPEG and save it to your desktop

In your next reply attach the screenshot.

Okay, here are the files. There are four of them, because I had to scroll down 4 times to get everything in there. :)

Don't see anything there

Do this

CLICK HERE to download the HijackThis Installer:
  • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click on HJTInstall.exe to run the program.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
  • Accept the license agreement by clicking the "I Accept" button.
  • Click on the "Do a system scan and save a log file" button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
  • Click "Save log" to save the log file and then the log will open in Notepad.
  • Click on "Edit -> Select All" then click on "Edit -> Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and paste the log in your next reply.
  • Do NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet! Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Is there anything in the msconfig startups that references the error message?
If not then do the following:

Lets see what you have in your startup services area

Please click on
Start and then to Run
Type in msconfig and press Enter
Now click on Services
Click on the Hide All Microsoft Services
Then uncheck everything and restart.
If system boots correctly and is running smoothly and faster then we have a startup problem
Try going back into msconfig and check one item and reboot
Keep doing that till you have found the problem or all are finally checked.
Post back with the results

Lets try something else.

Go to
Start and then to Run
Type in Chkdsk /r Note the space between k and /
Click Enter ...It will probably ask if you want to do this on the next reboot...click Y
If the window doesn't shutdown on its own then reboot the system manually. On reboot the system will start the chkdsk operation
This one will take longer then chkdsk /f

Note... there are 5 stages...
It may appear to hang at a certain percent for a hour or more or even back up and go over the same area...this is normal...
DO NOT SHUT YOUR COMPUTER DOWN WHILE CHKDSK IS RUNNING OR YOU CAN HAVE SEVERE PROBLEMS
This can take several hours to complete.
When completed it will boot the system back into windows.

Let me know if this fixes the problem
