Well, I am back after a couple of weeks with the Malware techs. They were very helpful. Together we got my machine clean.

They said, "your logs are clean" after we went through several iterations.

I have gone back to test to see if my JVM is functional now. It still isn't.

Here is a screen shot of the error.

Any new ideas?

OK my suspicions were right you did have some infection. So now lets try some of the first fixes we did.

Please download JavaRa from the link in my signature below to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder

• * Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  * Accept any prompts.
  * Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  * Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button.
  
• Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.

I ran JavaRa, uninstalled the JRE.

This time, it let me install the latest JRE.

I was able to run my internet ap, the indexing site I told you about before.

However, when I try to test the JVM at the java.com site, it still hangs the browser and throws a java.exe error, be it IE7 or Firefox.

I would like to know that the JVM is working. Is there another way to tell? One site would suggest it is working (the indexing site), and one site would suggest it is not (java.com). Is there another site that would confirm that the JVM is working?

Is it safe to download and install IE8 back onto my computer?

Yep you can install IE8 now and if it does not work we can always uninstall it.

The tester at javatester.org, the link you suggested, hung when I tried to see what version of JRE I had installed. The tester at java.com still hangs when I try to test the JVM.

OK I am just not sure what else to do at this point. Everything seems to be in working order but something is still stopping it from working.
It is possible you may have a active infection on the system from something you downloaded or installed/

You are suggesting that possibly I have an "active infection" from something I downloaded or installed. I don't know enough about this subject.

I am just curious. What's the difference between an active infection and all the bad stuff that the Malware techs helped me scan for?

Do you think I need to go back to the Malware techs again even though they gave me a clean bill of health?

The only other option is to try a Parallel installation and see if that would show a difference.

Parallel installation? A parallel installation of what, the OS? Java? IE?

How difficult is this? And what happens if the second installation results in a working JVM?

Parallel installation of OS. It installs a second Windows on your system parallel of the first one.
If it works and JVM works then the conclusion is that your original OS is somehow doinked and we can then transfer data over to the new one to see if that works after that.

Parallel Installation of Windows XP

Boot to the Windows XP installation cd by pressing a key when the "Press any key to boot from cd" prompt appears at the top of the screen.

• At the "Welcome to Setup" screen, press Enter to set up Windows XP.
• Accept the License Agreement by pressing F8
• With your current installation selected in the box, press Esc
• Select C: Partition1 [NTFS] in the box and press Enter
• To continue setup using this partition, press C
• Now you should see formatting options...choose the last one, Leave the current file system intact (no changes), and press Enter
• To use a different folder, press Esc
• Name the folder WINDOWS0 (just type a 0 (zero)) and press Enter

The Windows installation should begin. This will install Windows to a new folder, leaving your data intact. Any programs installed on the old directory will have to be reinstalled to the new one. Device drivers will also have to be installed for all the hardware to work as it should.

The data will be located in the Documents and Settings folder (C:\Documents and Settings) under your old user account name...so when you set up the new installation, give yourself a slightly different user account name.

A few questions before I proceed with your recommendation:

- You said talking about a parallel XP installation, "if it works and JVM works". Are you saying that the parallel installation may fail? Is this risky? Is this supposed to work? What happens if it doesn't?

- How much hard disk space will I need for a parallel installation?

- I don't understand parallel installations of XP, but will this second XP installation be able to see any of the files on the primary XP? Like the Java files?

- If I am not sure that I have all the source disks to install all my applications and the second XP works, does this mean that I would have to live without those apps?

- This sounds like a complicated move. I have never done anything like this. Are there "nice" ways to back out of this if I mess it up?

What the point is to this is to install a second xp alongside the existing XP. If it all works then what I mean is that if jvm works on the parallel installation then that tells me there is something more wrong with your original installation
The data files can be moved over to the enw installation but you will most likely have to reinstall all the programs.
The other option is to check the system for a infection.
