Doesn't sound malware related

I would post in the Windows XP forum about those issues

I fixed my sister's laptop with these instructions after she brought it to a technician twice who failed to fix it. She had TDSS. Thanks!

Hi,
I'm running Windows Vista 64 bit operating system. I tried to run TDSSKiller but it said that it's incompatible with this operating system. Any suggestions?

Thanks much.

Have you downloaded the latest version of TDSSKiller from here ?

http://support.kaspe.../tdsskiller.zip

If you get that error with that version, then you need to post in the malware forum

Thanks! That link for TDSSKiller worked.
I'm going through the Malware/Spyware Cleaning Guide and it seems to have fixed my redirect virus problem. I also just ran the TDSSKiller and it didn't find anything more. So I think my problem is taken care of. Thanks again!!

Ralphie - I have joined Geeks to Go purely for the purpose of posting a huge THANK YOU for your instructions on how to fix Google Redirects. My problem was the "Alureon" virus, which Microsoft Forefront Security could not remove from my Lenovo laptop. In my case, it wasn't just the redirects which were causing me grief, but also the fact that the virus caused havoc with my wireless connectivity. Mine is a work computer, but I knew that if I tried to get the work IT guys to look at the problem, it could have taken days to find a solution. So once again, a huge THANK YOU. It's Sunday night as I type this, and I can now go into work tomorrow knowing that I don't have to grapple with IT problems. Kind Regards, Cameron - Perth, Australia.

I think I spoke too soon...... Everything with my work laptop seems to be back to normal, except that when I plug into the network using an ethernet cable, it can't see the folders in the servers. It can see the mapped drives, but not the folders in them.

This can be resolved by going into msconfig and configuring the computer to start in diagnostic mode with all the boxes in the "Start Up" tab un-ticked. The problem is that I don't know which of the startup processes is the culprit - and every one in the list appears to be legitimate.

I seem to recall reading that Alureon can have an effect on DNS functionality - and I'm wondering if this is the root of my problem. But I have only a passing knowledge of networking, and don't know what to do next. Can you make any suggestions please ??

Please go to the malware forum and follow the instructions at the top....Especially the CLICK HERE.

That will give you several steps that will help you clean up 70 percent of all problems by yourself. If at the end of the process you are still having difficulty--and you may not be-- then post an OTListIt log in THAT forum.

Thank you! after 24hours of non-stop scanning and attempted deletions, redirections seem to have stopped. THank you!
background: google redirecting first to unkown search sites, then unrelated ok sites, then a porn site (note, first trojan in 15 years!)
originally had McAfee, uninstalled and installed Norton 360, ran in safemode, system restore off. Norton 360 picked up my555.sys/infostealer and quarantined but wouldn't allow manual deletion, suggested register key changes did not match any entries in system - could not find to manually delete line by line.
could not run Spybot even in safe mode, could not update or download spybot again as redirected from all spybot download sites
followed google's help forum re unwanted redirects, downloaded malwareblast, could not run, saved under different name, ran ok in safe mode and picked up 4 instances of trojan (can't find log sorry), but problem not fixed
changed spybot name, looked like it was running in taskmanager processes (low load), but wasn't
ran norton pc checkup, no luck
ran hijackthis, saved logs, looked for suggestions on suspicious entries, got lost
searched for fix for google redirect, found this post, followed instructions, couldn't run Erunt (even renamed) nor OTM. Skipped, downloaded TDSSKiller, renamed, ran like a dream, problem solved. logs below FYI. THank you soooooo much!
Also ahve windows event system and events aplication log files if interested. TNX!

I LOVE YOU GUYS!!! I have been fighting for MONTHS trying to rid myself of the "Google/Search Engine Redirect" monster-virus! I have downloaded almost every free virus software program I could find and while they found "some" malware, I still had the redirect problem and my computer kept running slower and slower and doing stranger and stranger things. I thought it was done for and I was working on accepting that I was going to be computer-less. I was getting very depressed. I finally stumbled upon the geekstogo site and found Ralphie's post.

I had no idea where I could have gotten this virus from - and the best I can trace it to is Facebook. I have a hard-fast rule to never open files or videos posted there unless I know the source. But one day I let my curiosity get the better of me and I did open a video posted by someone I didn't know very well ... and things got bad, very bad.

Thank you, Ralphie, for the easy-to-understand, step-by-step instructions - I printed them off before I tried anything but didn't need to. Everything worked as you said it would and I can't express enough how grateful and relieved I am to have my computer back. Thank you so very much!
