Vista keeps trying to boot after aborted update

The computer had a power outage during the time Windows warned not to turn it off during auto-update. Now the screen comes up "configuring updates 3 of 3" ... 0% and then restarts nover and over again. Pressing F8 during boot. none of the listed options gets into the OS. Just restarts with same message.
