hope you can help :tazz:

please note that i have followed all steps required prior to posting. (the only issue i had was with "panda activscan" it would not download properly off their site; however, i used the other online scan as suggested by you).

in addition, I have regularly ran spybot, lavasoft's Ad-Aware SE, McAfee, and have installed Microsoft SP1.

my issues;

first, when surfing the net, a search engine called "horse-search.net" continually redirects the page; however, since running through the suggested steps... it seems to have stopped.

second, something called "SmartSecurity" (had taken control of my desktop a few weeks back -- it was completely red with no icons and a box recommending i use their service. i managed to clear the desktop, but all icons are doubled with the exception of "my documents", "my computer", "recycle bin", and "internet explorer". i am unable to right click any of the icons or drag them; however, i am able to use them as a shortcut;

finally, when starting up the computer, i get an info box that simply states "invalid back web application id '137903'". no other problems seem to stem from this box, i just click ok and it disappears.

below, please find the hijackthis log, and the ewido log; i have not attached the Ad-Aware log per the instructions on your site.

HOPE YOU CAN HELP ;)

Justiceforall,

My name is Justin, and I will be helping you clean up your system. First I would like to apologize for the delay in answering your post, also, thank you for following the directions in the How To Post Log.

Lets get started!

HijackThis is being run from a temporary folder; this means that any backups it creates as a result of fixes made with it will be lost. Please create a new folder (usually on your desktop) and name it HJT or HiJackThis, and move the program into the new folder.

Next, please deactivate Microsoft AntiSpyware when making the below fixes. You may start it back up once the you complete the fixes mentioned below.

Please download "Del Domain" from here:

http://www.geekstogo...=download&id=40

Download it to your desktop or somewhere you will find it. Extract the .inf file from the .zip file you just downloaded. We will use this file later when we are in safemode.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4FF482AA-3B62-41BD-6BD1-658308B4AA9F} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\tvvedlm.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [uniper] C:\WINDOWS\uniper.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Notn] C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\wtta.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Tso] C:\WINDOWS\Jck.exe
O4 - Startup: file[1].exe
O21 - SSODL: NTDBGTOOL - {E6E34196-1092-4F87-824B-A3615B1D9C61} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\iassview.dll (file missing)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):

wtta.exe
purityscan.exe

Please note any other programs that you dont recognize in that list in your next response

Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):

C:\WINDOWS\uniper.exe
ALCXMNTR.EXE
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\wtta.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Jck.exe
O4 - Startup: file[1].exe

Now right click "Deldomains.inf" and click "Install". It will not appear to have done anything, thats ok. Next step.

After that, Reboot.

You can reactivate Microsoft AntiSpyware now.

Next post a fresh HiJackThis log, along with the problems you still notice.

Hi Justin,

thanks for your help... although i had some issues with your directions.

first, i could not locate microsoft antispyware on my system to deactivate it. i was certain that when i followed the original instructions i installed microsoft spk1, but i may not have done it properly;

second, i downloaded "del domain" and saved the zip file to my desktop. when i went to extract the .inf file from the zip it only gave me the option to unzip "all files". i did so and it saved another file called "del domains" to my desktop. when i opened that file it looked like a one page "note pad" type document and is named DelDomains.inf... anyway, i cant right click on the icon because of the problem i'm having with the desktop. in addition, all icons are still being doubled;

third, none of the files under the add/remove instruction were present;

finally, when i attempted to locate "04 - startup: file[1].exe" via windows explorer it gave me a pop up box saying "04 - startup" was not a valid folder. so i tried searching for "file[1].exe" and nothing was found. in addition, when i searched for the file "c:\documents and settings\owner\application data\wtta.exe" i got a pop up message saying "in location that is unavailable...";

i'm still experiencing all of the original issues with my desktop icons, and the "invalid back web log application" pop up box that appears when i start up the computer still appears. however, the "horsesearch.net" redirect that was plaguing my internet exploring has totally stopped.

here is the hijackthis log:

Justiceforall,
Im going to respond to your questions now, and tomorrow morning I will type up some more fixes for you to do, I just need tonight to look around and find a few things.

first, i could not locate microsoft antispyware on my system to deactivate it. i was certain that when i followed the original instructions i installed microsoft spk1, but i may not have done it properly;

Dont worry about this. You do still have SP2 installed on your system, and for now that is fine. If things do not go away I will have you uninstall Service Pack 2, but right now it is not something we need to do.

third, none of the files under the add/remove instruction were present;

That is perfectly normal, somethimes HiJackThis will get rid of everything. We just have you check in add/remove programs to make sure nothing remains.

finally, when i attempted to locate "04 - startup: file[1].exe" via windows explorer it gave me a pop up box saying "04 - startup" was not a valid folder. so i tried searching for "file[1].exe" and nothing was found. in addition, when i searched for the file "c:\documents and settings\owner\application data\wtta.exe" i got a pop up message saying "in location that is unavailable...";

This was an error on my part, I shouldnt have had you look for the (O4 - Startup....). Dont worry about going in and looking for file[1].exe, I will look at your log tonight, and if it is still there, I will tell you what to do in my next response.

I want to thank you for asking these questions, because it lets me know where I need to be more specific.

I will have a fix for you sometimes tomorrow morning. I will try to get it posted as soon as I can.

Justiceforall,

This is a small fix for now, but I am going to do things in pieces. we need to fix your desktop before we can move on. Try this fix:

Click "Start", "Settings", and then click "Control Panel".
Open the "Display" applet.
Click on "Desktop", "Customise Display..." and "Web".
In the box under "Web pages" look for a checkbox named "Security". If found select it and click "Delete".

Let me know if that fixed your desktop issue.

Also post a new HiJackThis log after completeing the above.

Justiceforall,

Open the start menu, then click on search.

In the box type in

C:\WINDOWS\Jck.exe

I had you delete this file, and I want to know if it is still there.

If it is still there, please let me know(you do not have to delete it again).

Ifit does not exist any more please post a new HiJackThis log for me to look at.

Also, please make a folder for HiJackThis on your desktop, and move the HiJackThis.exe into the newly created folder.

Justiceforall,

This will kill the infection that is hijacking your desktop. However it will not reset your desktop image, I will instruct you on how to do that after you run this fix. Make sure that you have moved HiJackThis into its own folder on your desktop before continuing!

Download and Save Spywadfix to your computer from this link:
http://www.thespykil...s/spywadfix.exe

It will automatically extract to c:\spywad where it needs to be to run and will automatically open the remove spywad.vbs script for you ready to paste in the line mentioned below.
If you have script blocking enabled you will get a warning about a malicious script wanting to run. Please allow this script to run.

It is not malicious.
It will open an Input box. Paste this line into the box

C:\WINDOWS\Jck.exe

The script will kill that process, backup and then delete any matching files in System32 and your Windows Directory. It will create a log of all files deleted. This log file will be named Spywad.txt and be located inside the C:\Spywad Folder. The backups will also be located in two subfolders there. One named Systems and the other named Window.

The script will search the Windows Directory and delete desktop.html and popup.html if they exist. It will add entries to the log if these files are found and deleted.

It will then kill Explorer. You will lose your taskbar and desktop. It will repair the registry entries returning your windows default desktop and context menu functions.
It will restart Explorer.

If hijackthis doesn't start, run it manually.

--------------------------
When finished, post the contents of Spywad.txt and a new Hijackthis log

Justice,

Manually search for desktop.html and popup.html, if your computer finds them, delete them.

If you delete either of those files, reboot your computer. If you do not see the files, then continue on with the fixes below

Then, have each User account sign in and run Other Profiles Regfix.vbs
Open C:\ (Go to Start>Run and type C: Press enter) and Open the C:\Spywad folder. Double click on Other Profiles Regfix.vbs

Explorer will be ended and that user's active desktop registry entries will be repaired. Explorer will be restarted.

You will need to do this step for every user account

To reset your wallpaper, open Display Properties > Desktop Tab. Choose a Wallpaper and apply. Close Display Properties. To see the change, click on the desktop and press F5.

Then post a new HiJackThis log.

JUSTIN!! you are the man!!

looks like i have control of my desktop... no double icons and i can right click and drag. i found the "desktop.html" and deleted it... no "popup.html".

i would like to run McAfee virus check, Ad-awarre, and spybot... as i have not done so since we began... is that ok? also, would you like a fresh hijackthis log? please recommend a good protocal for protecting the computer. i have all off the programs listed above plus the ewido and microsoft spk2. what should i keep and get rid of...?

one other thing... i don't think there are multiple users on this computer. its actually a family computer and i'm in town using it temporarily... i've been working on cleaning it up since i got here... and thanks to you, i think all the problems are gone. how can i verify if there is more than one user?

finally, i'm a student... fresh out of law school and just passed the FLA bar. don't have much money just yet to donate... but i will give what i can. once i'm sworn in, do not hesitate to contact me for free legal advice... that goes for the whole geekstogo gang...

thanks again... i'm most grateful!!

i was so excited it worked... forgot the fresh hijackthis log... here you go...

by the way... aren't i supposed to be able to right click on the icon on the desktop and get a list of options such as "delete". i'm not getting that... but when i right click and drag... i get a list of options such as "create shortcut". i always thought i could right click and delete an icon?
