My laptop running XP was infected with a malware program which tried to get me to download a program to scan & clean my hard drive. I used the restore feature to go back to a time before the computer was infected. That got rid of the malware but now whenever I click on an icon or select a program from the start menu or the programs list it tells me the application was not found. These are applications like Word, Power Point etc. It does allow me to use Internet Explorer. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Thanks

Don't be fooled by the restore option. The malware is still there and I suggest you go to the Malware Removal and Spyware Removal Forum and run all the steps located in the
START HERE. These self-help tools will help you clean up 70% of problems on your own.
If you are still having problems after doing the steps, then please post the reguested logs in THAT forum.
If you are unable to run any of the tools then start a new topic in the malware forum and put this in the subject line...I am unable to run any malware tools

If you are still having problems after being given a clean bill of health from the malware expert, then please return to THIS thread and we will pursue other options to help you solve your current problem(s).

Why send him to bleepingcomputer or techmud when it can be done here at GeeksToGo? We have a Malware Removal Guides and Tutorials forum here, although he would need to know which infection he had to use either of the pages.

I am having the same problem. Fake security virus removal showed up so I restored my computer. Now I keep getting message rundll32.exe is missing every time I try to open any program up. I am unable to scan my computer for virus and I am unable to download anything because I get a box saying Open With and choose the program. Please HELP!! :)

Put in your topic then in the added description that you can't download any malware tools.
Try again and get a screenshot of the box you are mentioning.

To do a screenshot please have click on your Print Screen on your keyboard. It is normally the key above your number pad between the F12 key and the Scroll Lock key
Now go to Start and then to All Programs
Scroll to Accessories and then click on Paint
In the Empty White Area click and hold the CTRL key and then click the V
Go to the File option at the top and click on Save as
Save as file type JPEG and save it to your Desktop

I have pretty close to the same issue with my computer, only I can run very few applications and paint is not one of them in order to get a screen shot of the black box that pops up when I try and run any of geekstogo malware removal programs from this site. The black box appears but for a brief second and i simply cannot make any of it out in that short of time frame. But virtually every application is not usable, but am able to access internet at this time.
