Dont want to lose either AIM or Yahoo Messenger programs. I use both at times. Want to get rid of Windows Messenger, which as I have said before, IS NOT EVEN AN INSTALLED WINDOWS COMPONENT, as I never allow Windows to install it when I put Windows XP on any machine. I also think the thing I am seeing at startup of Windows is a spoof of Windows Messenger because there is no way to disable the startup of the program automatically when Windows starts up as the help file of the program sign-in box says there should be!!! I DON'T want ANYTHING to load/run at startup except for my antivirus, spyware blockers, and firewall, and my WeatherBug program.

Now for the Hijack Startup List Log you requested. I did all the actions to get rid of that one entry, "O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FFFFFFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFFFFFFFFFF} - (no file)" after disabling TeaTimer. OK hon......here's what I found when I ran services.msc and found Messenger, then right-clicked on it.....First of all, it ALREADY IS DISABLED!!! Secondly, I copied the description of it....mind you, it is the only entry that has Messenger on the entire listing of Local Services!!! Here is the copied description:

"Transmits net send and Alerter service messages between clients and servers. This service is not related to Windows Messenger. If this service is stopped, Alerter messages will not be transmitted. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start."

I dunno, hon.....not to question your superior expertise, but I have installed Windows XP Pro a dozen times at least....and Windows Messenger is an optional installation feature....which as I said....I NEVER install......you won't find it in the listing of Windows Components in my Control Panel, either.....not on any but one computer I have built.....and that one is my housesitter's who asked me to install it for her because she has friends on Windows Messenger she wanted to communicate with using it....

Make sure ALL programs and windows are closed.

Go to Start > Run - copy and paste this line, exactly:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Click OK.

You will be prompted to restart.

I just tested in on my XP and it worked great, so let me know how it goes.

Only thing that isn't right now is the Windows Startup sound.......even though when I go to Control Panel and check for the sounds, it seems to have the standard Windows default startup sound selected, when I start Windows from my user account, I don't get the sound....a minor detail to say the least.

Good morning!! Yes, I would like my Windows startup and other system sounds to work on just my account on this Windows XP Pro installation. When I log in to someone elses account on this computer, the Windows startup sound works, but not on mine .

I think the speed of the computer's response on the internet may be slowed by this hotel's hi-speed internet service (Speedlinks by Best Western), because it seems to first go through some connection named "Nomadix" and flashes up a connecting message saying so when you first open up your home page in your web browser. I am not sure, but the ewido security suite just updated itself, and I also updated AVG Free Edition last night. The speed of the computer may be slowed by the two antivirus programs (ewido and AVG) running simultaneously. I have never experienced any slow downs with my normal suite of AVG, ZoneAlarm, and SypBot S&D. I don't know if the Ad-Aware SE is running in the background, too, after my first steps in getting rid of this nasty infection.

Copy everything in the box below. Paste it into a new Notepad file and change the "Save As Type" to "All Files". Save it as regfix.reg on your desktop. Make sure there is NO blank line above REGEDIT4
