In November 2009 I started having problems with my PC. Alerts kept popping up warning of virii, red shields in the Taskbar Notification Area, and offers to download security software from Antivirus System Platinum. The Norton software that came with my PC had expired and I was hesitant to purchase ANYTHING online wjth a credit card. So I wasted some time, then panicked. I down loaded and installed Antivirus System Platinum on 12/5/2009.

Now, I really don't remember how or on what date I stopped the mess. One day I turned of my Internet modem before turning the PC on. My son suspected the Antivirus System Pro and I figured out a way to disable it via the Antivirus System Pro control window. The chaos has stopped but Antivirus System Pro is still in the PC.

I purchased, installed and enabled Norton 360 Version 3.0 on 12/28/2009. According to the Norton Security History it detected and quarantined 4 high risk activities on 12/28 and 2 on 12/29. There were three Trojan Horses and 3 were Downloaders.

I want to get rid of all traces of Antivirus System Platinum. My son advised me to get help uninstalling and removing the antivirus and any other bad things that may be lurking within.

I have run TFC, ERUNT, MBAM and OTL per the Malware, Spyware Cleaning Guide. GMER never ran successfully.

I have attempted to run GMER 3 times.

1st Run: I have no documentation.

2nd Run: After more than 6 hours it appeared to have stopped scanning files. Could not close the GMER window. In Windows Task Manager CPU Usage was 100%. Ending the task did no good. Could not access Start Menu Log Off. I use the PC Power switch to shutdown.

3rd Run: After more than 6 hours GMER was still scanning files. After 10 hours it appeared to have finished. The list on the Process tab was updating when the PC rebooted. Never got to save the log file.

I just ran TFC and ERUNT again, but could not run mbam-setup.exe! When I clicked Run I got a Error popup i.e., "Error - The setup files are corrupted. Please obtain a new copy of the program." Tried 3 times. I downloaded again but had the same result.

Please help!?

Hi chally,

Welcome to Geeks To Go!

My name is mpascal, and I will be helping you fix your problem.

Before we begin, I would like to make a few things clear so that we can fix your problem as efficiently as possible:
  • Be sure to follow all my instructions carefully! If there is anything you don't understand, don't hesitate to ask.
  • Please do not do anything or perform other steps unless I have asked you to do so.
  • Please make sure you post all logs I ask you to, and make sure that the entire log gets posted.
  • If you are unsure of how to reply, or need help with anything regarding the website, please look here.
I also recommend that you print these instructions as you may be required to boot in safe mode

As it has been a few days, I'm going to need some fresh logs. Please run the following:

STEP 1 - MBAM

Posted Image Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here.

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a check mark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

STEP 2 - Sysprot

Download SysProt Antirootkit (you will find it at the bottom of the page under attachments, or you can get it from one of the mirrors).

Unzip it into a folder on your desktop.

Start the Sysprot.exe program.
  • Click on the Log tab.
  • In the Write to log box select all items.
  • Click on the Create Log button on the bottom right.
  • After a few seconds a new Window should appear.
  • Make sure Scan all drives is selected and click on the Start button.
  • When it is complete, a new window will appear to indicate that the scan is finished.
  • The log will be created and saved automatically in the same folder. Open the text file and copy/paste the log here.

STEP 3 - OTL

  • Open OTL. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Change the Standard Registry and Extra Registry options to Use Safelist.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • In the Custom Scans box, copy and paste the following:
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    eventlog.dll
    scecli.dll
    netlogon.dll
    cngaudit.dll

    ntelogon.dll
    logevent.dll
    iaStor.sys

    atapi.sys
    IdeChnDr.sys
    viasraid.sys
    AGP440.sys
    vaxscsi.sys
    nvatabus.sys
    viamraid.sys
    nvata.sys
    nvgts.sys
    iastorv.sys
    ViPrt.sys
    eNetHook.dll
    ahcix86.sys
    KR10N.sys
    nvstor32.sys
    ahcix86s.sys
    nvrd32.sys
    symmpi.sys
    adp3132.sys
    mv61xx.sys
    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s

    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply.
STEP 4 - Reply

Please reply with the following logs:

Glad to meet you, mpascal.

Am I doing something wrong? Clicking on the link in your instructions to download MBAM took me to a website where I clicked on Download Now for Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. I saw nothing happen! The two icons I already had on my desktop have the same "Modified" date they had before. Was it downloaded? I clicked on the Desktop mbam-setup.exe icon anyway and got the same error I described in my initial post.

Sorry, what was the error? I can't seem to find it. If you can't run MBAM, then just move onto the next step.

To answer the question you asked in your last post, i.e., "Sorry, what was the error? I can't seem to find it." :

From my first post: "could not run mbam-setup.exe! When I clicked Run I got a Error popup i.e., "Error - The setup files are corrupted. Please obtain a new copy of the program." Tried 3 times. I downloaded again but had the same result."

I am grateful for your guidance, but feel like I'm walking with a blindfold on.

Question: What should I have seen when I tried to download Malwarebytes'Anti-Malware?

Here are the SysProtLog.txt and OTL.txt files:

Hi,

Please download ComboFix and save it to your Desktop.NOTE: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop
  • If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
    • Tools->Options->Main tab
    • Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".
  • During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

    Posted Image

    Posted Image
  • It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
  • Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don''t know how to disable it, please ask.

      -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Double click on combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post C:\Combo-Fix.txt in your next post.
**Note: Do not click the ComboFix window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Hi chally,

Lets try downloading Malwarebytes again (instructions are below). I'm really not sure why it's causing that error. Usually it installs without much of a hassle.

STEP 1 - OTL Fix

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :Files
    c:\documents and settings\charlesjr\GoToAssistDownloadHelper.exe

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done.
STEP 2 - MBAM

STEP 3 - Kaspersky

Using Internet Explorer or Firefox, visit Kaspersky Online Scanner

1. Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.

2. To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan. Click HERE to see how to disable the most common antivirus programs.
3. Click Run at the Security prompt.

The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
Please be patient as this can take quite a long time to download.
  • Once the update is complete, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, adware, dialers, and other riskware
    • Archives
    • E-mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View report... at the bottom.
  • Click the Save report... button.

    Posted Image

  • Change the Files of type dropdown box to Text file (.txt) and name the file KasReport.txt to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
STEP 4 - Reply

Please reply with the following logs:
  • MBAM Log
  • Kaspersky Log

Ran OTL per your instrucions.

Tried to load MBAM. The site your link took me to didn't look the sam as on 2/19/2010. I tried twice with the same results. It saw nothing happen. The modify dates on the Desktop mbam-setup.exe and the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware shortcut had not changed. I double-clicked on mbam-setup.exe. I got a security warning box and clicked Run. An Error dialog box came up saying "The setup files are corrupted. Please obtain a new copy of the program."

I then went on to download and run Kaspersky per your instructions, including disabling the Nortion 360 Antivirus Auto-Protect for 5 hours. After clicking on My Computer it appeared to be scanning. I accidently clicked my Taskbar start button and dragged the mouse. My Desktop and part of the Kaspersky window went white! I can't document here the things I tried to recover the Kaspersky window. About 4 and a half hours after starting Kaspersky. there was a "completed successfully status in the Kaspersy window. When I clicked View Report the entire screen went white again. The report listed three infected file names:

C:\hp\bin\wbug\HPPavilion_Sprin06.exe
D:\I386\APPS\APP06061\src\CompaqPresno_Spring06.exe
D:\I386\APPS\APP06061\src\HPPavilion_Sprin06.exe

I clicked Save Report. The bottom half of an EWPCore window popped up instead of the expected box to enter the log file name. I clicked OK. The bottom part of another box popped up. Neither box closed. I gave up at this point. I went to Windows Task Manager ended the Kaspersky program. I checked Norton 360. It had resumed Antivirus Auto-Protect.

I didn't want to try again without your concurrence.

Too wordy, huh? I thought I could save us ping-ponging replies.

Alright, that is rather odd. Try this instead then.

Download avz4.zip from here
  • Unzip it to your desktop to a folder named avz4
  • Double click on AVZ.exe to run it.
  • Run an update by clicking the Auto Update button on the Right of the Log window: Posted Image
  • Click Start to begin the update
Note: If you recieve an error message, chose a different source, then click Start again
  • Start AVZ.
  • Choose from the menu "File" => "Standard scripts " and mark the "Advanced System Analysis with malware removal mode enabled" check box.
    Posted Image
  • Click on the Execute selected scripts.
  • Automatic scanning, healing and system check will be executed.
  • A logfile (avz_sysinfo.htm) will be created and saved in the LOG folder in the AVZ directory as virusinfo_syscure.zip.
  • It is necessary to reboot your machine, because AVZ might disturb some program operations (like antiviruses and firewall) during the system scan.
  • All applications will work properly after the system restart.
When restarted
  • Start AVZ.
  • Choose from the menu "File" => "Standard Scripts" and mark the Advanced System Analysis check box.
    Posted Image
  • Click on the "Execute selected scripts".
  • A system check will be automatically performed, and the created logfile (avz_sysinfo.htm) will be saved in the LOG folder in the AVZ directory as virusinfo_syscheck.zip.
Attach both virusinfo_syscure.zip and virusinfo_syscheck.zip to your next post

To attach a file, do the following:
  • Click Add Reply
  • Under the reply panel is the Attachments Panel
  • Browse for the attachment file you want to upload, then click the green Upload button
  • Once it has uploaded, click the Manage Current Attachments drop down box
  • Click on Posted Image to insert the attachment into your post

I tried 6 times to deownload AVZ. Each time a File Download window openned. On every attempt except one the File Download window closed when I clicked save and nothing else happened. On the Third try a Save window opened with file name, avz4.zip, under the File Download window. I clicked Save, selected Desktop, and Save. Both windows closed and nothing happened. The zipped folder never appeared on the Desktop.

I decided to search the C: disk for avz*. I found the following:

Download the GMER Rootkit Scanner. Unzip it to your Desktop.

Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.

Double-click gmer.exe. The program will begin to run.

WARNING:
These types of scans can produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any
"<--- ROOKIT" entries unless advised!

If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan.
  • Click NO
  • In the right panel, you will see a bunch of boxes that have been checked. Leave everything checked and ensure the Show All box is un-checked.
  • Now click the Scan button.
Once the scan is complete, you may receive another notice about rootkit activity.
  • Click OK.
  • GMER will produce a log. Click on the Save button, and in the File name area, type in "GMER.txt"
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop. Post the contents of the log in your next reply.
