Got info to use ubuntu to recover files from my dead pc, and I didnt read the manual or pay close attention to what Broni told me, got in a hurry and installed ubuntu instead of just trying without changing computer settings. So now I have ubuntu as my operating system and need to know if there is any hope of still retrieving my files and pictures or is it a lost cause? :)

That depends on how you did the install. Most-likely yes due to the default is to resize the partition.
