Hello all,

I didn't know where to put this, because it may or may not be a hardware issue. However, since the problem occurred after installing new hardware, I thought I'd post here.

Anyways, as the title says, I installed a new hard drive the other day. When I closed my computer and hooked everything back up, I noticed that the audio was gone. I updated my drivers, looked on the net for a fix, and I haven't been able to resolve it. My computer says that everything is working fine, and that I should have sound, but I do not.

Operating System: Windows 7

Model Number: Gateway DX4820

Sound Card: Realtek

Any help would be greatly appreciated, because I have absolutely no clue.

1: STARTand the click on RUN
2: Type in devmgmt.msc
3: Click Enter
4. Look for any entries with Yellow Exclamation ! marks or Red X's

Thanks for your reply. I will try to answer your questions:

1) The hard drive I installed is merely for storage. I did not install an operating system on it.

2) I typed devmgmt.msc and went to the device manager. There are no Yellow Exclamations or Red X's...

Everything seems to be working fine, but there's just no sound.

Sounds like you may have accidentally unplugged the audio cable from insid the system.
Is this the system sounds or just from the cdrom?

I thought that was the case, but I opened up my computer today and everything seems connected. The audio isn't functioning for the entire system.

OK then let's check everything out here.

OK then I need to see what the Audio Properties show as your default audio device.
Go to Start and then to Control Panel
Right click on the Sound or Audio Devices and then click on Properties
At the top of the window click on Audio and what does it say for Default Audio Device?
Click on Playback and same information?

Okay, my setup is a bit different. There is no Sound and Audio Devices section, there is a "Manage Audio Devices" section. In the playback tab, it says that my default audio device is Speakers.

Btw, I thought it may have been my speakers, but I switched them with ones that definitely work, and the result is the same.

OK speakers is not the option we need. What we need is the audo sound card.
Check speaker connection to back of system
Check volume control in windows by doing the following:
Go to Start and The Run
Type in sndvol32.exe and press Enter
Make sure Master Volume is not muted and turned up
Check Cd Player volume is not muted and turned up


If this gives no resolution then I need you to reboot and go into the BIOS.
Usually you would click DEL to do this but your system may be different.
It may call yours Setup
Once in you need to find the Advanced or onboard peripherals area.
Make sure the onboard audio or sound is enabled.
Once that is done then click F10 and then Y to save and exit.
The systemw ill not boot back into windows where hopefully now the sound will work.

Please let me know what your results are.

Oh boy. I really appreciate your effort, but I tried what you said and my situation is the same. I went to the bios and my onboard audio was already enabled.

When you said that speakers wasn't the option I need, what do you mean?

The default audio device should be your sound card. It should show like this like on mine.

Okay, but I don't know how to set it like that. There is nothing giving me that option.

OK in your case it would be the Digital Audio(HDMI) that you would want for your default payback device.

I set it to default but I'm still getting no sound...

Yes, there is a 'Sound, video and game controllers section'. I attached an image of what I have.
