I am working on my neighbor's HP pavilion dv9008nr notebook. It is running windows xp. During startup, it stops after mup.sys. It will not load in safe mode. I have run checkdisk from windows xp recovery. I have done a hard reset to the computer.I have run a hard disk test. I have tried restore the system to a restore using HP Recovery Manager and Last Known Good configuration using Microsoft System Restore.
I tried Restoring the Windows XP registry to a bootable configuration.
None of these have worked.
After loading mup.sys, I get a BSOD with a message that ends with Technical Information: STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC000001D, 0x80536DDC, 0xF78AE508, 0xF78AE204)

There has been no recent addition of new hardware.
I am looking for any other suggestions before I reformat it to factory settings.
