Hello, I obtained msconfigs and p2pnetworka couple weeks ago. I manually deleted them and realized they my system32 folder is still hidden, and I cannot run regedit from "run". I did some searching with the windows search for msconfigs and p2pnetwork, I found a couple items in the temporary directory and mcafee only then decided to delete it (the worm). After that I also ran a scan, and am running one now, after the first scan It found nothing and I downloaded the HijackThis tool, did a scan, here where the results. (look for the bunch of stars ->)

****I then deleted the p2p network, went to msconfig, set to start in safe mode, rebooted, started in safe mode, ran a scan with HijackThis, this time it did not find the p2p network.****

Well the virus scan is almost complete and has turned up nothing, But I would like to note that I use EasyCleaner, and I just did all my maintnance stuff with it, while looking at my startup programs it placed a yellow dot next to a listing, meaning it is potentially dangerous, or too hard for the program to understand, which happens with 3dsmax, anyway the listing is

NvMediaCenter, RunDLL32.exe NvMCTray.dll,

But I am guessing it is something for Nvidia, even though I dont have a media center for it... Just my display taskbar icon which i have disabled. It is 2:00am and all my spyware scans are starting up, but they never catch anything on the p2pnetwork except for aol antispyware. I think Im going to head over to the downloads page and download stuff I probably dont need

Doomed1, NvMediaCenter, RunDLL32.exe NvMCTray.dll is legitimate, don't worry about it. It's associated with that System Tray icon you disabled.

I have some questions:

It appears you've upgraded from Windows 2000 to Windows XP. Do you have the XP upgrade disk handy in case we need any files from it? (No, I'm not going to ask you to reformat.)

Have you disabled System Restore? If so, please re-enable it immediately, and infected restore point is better than none at all.

You've been infected with the WIN32.ALCAN.A worm, which is transmitted via P2P networks. What P2P application do you use?

Ok, let's try to fix this up.

Please download the free trial of Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal 5.0 here http://www.kaspersky.com/trials. We're going to run it in Safe Mode.

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Now run a full scan with KAV, and let me know of any files it can't delete.

After that, reboot normally and do a search for these files:

x.txt
cmd.com
netstat.com
ping.com
regedit.com
taskkill.com
tasklist.com
tracert.com
z.txt

Delete any you find, and if you have trouble with any deletions, let me know.

Rescan with HijackThis and place a checkmark next to the following entries:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

Now, close all windows including your browser and then click "Fix Checked" in Hijackthis.

Reboot and post a new HJT log, and tell me if your problems persist.

OK well I did all of that, I didnt find anything with anything. The following is my HJT log, and I am also posting a picture, showing what i get when i type "regedit" into run. I tested "command" and it works. chksdk also works, and I ran that and it found some things wrong with the index and fixed them, but it didnt help anything. I still cannot get on as I said when I talked to you, when it is done dialing up I get the blue screen.

I wasnt really in a hurry before but now I cant even get on the net. I need to also know how to remove mcafee, or I need to get rid of the other one. I know there are errors there now haveing 2 antivirus. Thanks.

Also I really need to get rid of both antivirus because I plan to get AVG once I get this junk figured out.

Doomed1, please disable Microsoft Anti-Spyware for the time-being by right-clicking it's icon in the System Tray and selecting 'Shut down...'

Click Start >> Run
Type "services.msc" (without the quotes) in the run box that pops up.
Locate AOL Spyware Protection Service>, right-click on it and select 'Properties'.
Click 'Stop'.
Set 'Startup Type' to 'Disabled'.
Exit services.msc.

Launch HijackThis and click 'Config' >> 'Misc Tools' >> 'Delete an NT Service'.
Copy and paste the following into the box that appears:
AOL Spyware Protection Service

Click 'OK', then 'Back'. Rescan with HJT and place a checkmark next to the following entries (if still present):

AOL Spyware Protection, under services in my scan log was not there, and when I went to disable AOL Spyware Protection it was already disabled. Also now Mcafee is broken (

yay) finally broke through the wall, yes however now I am naked, lol..

Ok now we have to find those files I mentioned earlier. We know at least one exists.

Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
Click Start. Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Now try to find and delete these files:

x.txt
cmd.com
netstat.com
ping.com
regedit.com
taskkill.com
tasklist.com
tracert.com
z.txt

If Search Companion doesn't find them, go to C:\WINNT and C:\WINNT\System32 and manually look for them. Let me know if you found any and if you had any problems with the deletions.

Please disconnect from the Internet while performing this fix. I suggest unplugging your modem from the computer.

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete once => Click the Processes tab => Double-click the Image Name column header to alphabetically sort the processes => Scroll through the list and look for "mcvsrte.exe". If you find the file, click it, and then click End Process =>Answer "Yes at the prompt".

Repeat the process for:

mcregwiz.exe
mghtml.exe
mcshield.exe

Don't worry if some of these processes aren't listed, just stop the ones that are.

Exit the Task Manager.

Click Start >> Run
Type "services.msc" (without the quotes) in the run box that pops up.
Locate McAfee.com McShield, right-click on it and select 'Properties'.
Click 'Stop'.
Set 'Startup Type' to 'Disabled'.

Repeat the process for:

McAfee SecurityCenter Update Manager
McAfee.com VirusScan Online Realtime Engine

Exit services.msc.

Still in Safe Mode, rescan with HJT and fix the following entries:

Please read Tony Klein's article: So how did I get infected in the first place?.

It is extremely important to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up-to-date. Please go to http://v5.windowsupd...t.aspx?ln=en-us regularly and install ALL critical updates.

It would be a good idea to install a firewall if you don't have one . Here are a few free ones:
Kerio Personal Firewall
Zone Alarm
Sygate Personal Firewall

I strongly recommend installing three free programs: SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, and IE/Spyad.

Use AdAware SE and Spybot S&D regularly to scan your system. Links to excellent tutorials on these programs are in my signature below.

Finally, I suggest downloading and trying Mozilla Firefox browser. Firefox is a free fully functional browser. It's much safer than Internet Explorer.
