iPod use for the 98 system

I know that the iPod is supposed to be used with a XP system, but there was something on the internet that said it is possible to transfer CDs to your iPod without using XP, and on 98.

1. Is there a free iTunes-like program that transfers CDs and mp3s from your computer to the iPod for Windows 98?

2. Would the iPod still be compatible with this program, or is it just the iTunes program that is not compatible with XP?
