At the risk of being repetitive, I see what you guys prefer. How do you rate the pay for AV programs like McAfee, Norton, etc. ? Are they any better or not?

Nope and the ones you mentioned are known to be resource hogs which will slow your system down.

To be honest, McAfee is known as McCrappy and Norton is pretty much a virus in itself, they actually had to come up with a special program just to remove it off your system. Both very resource hungry meaning they slow your computer down.

If you are looking into paid AV's, NOD32 and Kaspersky are known to be quite good.

Malwarebytes and Super-Antispyware are excellent scanners as well, to date, the best. You can locate their download locations in my signature.

You may want to take a look at Preventing Malware and Safe Computing written by one of our Malware Experts, Rorschach112.
