I'm setting up a laptop for my cousin and I'm trying to install Windows updates. The updates started after shutdown.

It has been stuck on "Installing 1 of 22 updates" for 4 hours. In desperation I did a force shutdown and then started it again. It comes up with the same screen. I can't get past this to cancel the updates so I can troubleshoot.

How can I stop the update process when it has taken over the OS? forced shutdown doesn't work

The laptop is a Dell Inspiron with Windows 7 Home Premium.
