laptop troubles

i have a laptop and when i plugged in a usb mouse to it the icon went haywire then unplugged the mouse and it locked up the computer. turned it back on and now it wont turn on long enough to see what the problem is. the battery is shot and it has to stay plugged into the wall socket just to use it.
