My old desktop has had the bomb and I decided to buy a new laptop. The hard drive in my old desktop is a seagate barracuda ultra ata. I would like to be able to put this drive into an external enclosure and transfer some of the old data back onto my laptop and also use it as a backup drive. Can anyone recommend a suitable external enclosure since I have been searching the net and am confused by some of the jargon!

seagate barracuda ultra ata

This could be a ide drive because the op stated "old desktop"

Can you get the model number of the drive so we can be sure to recommend the correct interface.

That is a ide drive and not a SATA drive.

Seagate Barracuda 80GB Hard Drive 3.5" IDE ST380011A
Desktop - Internal, External - 80 GB - EIDE, IDE, DMA/ATA-100 - 100 Mbps - 7,200 RPM

What you want is a USB enclosure that will accept a ide/pata drive. As long as it says ide on it (and 3.5 inch)you are good.
