Contact Compaq and ask to purchase the original Recovery disks for your madel.
They should only cost about 30 to 40 USD.
No you cannot get them on the net without purchasing straight form Compaq.

When you get a new hd you will have to make sure it is the correct type. From what you have just described it looks like it would be a IDE hard drive.
What it is saying is that the hd has a jumper on it that would have tobe set fro master with slave from what I understand.
Yes you could purchase a new OS like XP, Vista or Win 7.

OK the instructions would be the same. If the instructions on the enclosure says the hd needs to be set to master then on the back of the hd where the power and ribbon plug into it there should be a jumper, blue, yellow or white. It is put on two pins and depending on which pins they are on dictates if the drive is a master, slave or cable select.

All ide drives will come with the jumper set for a "master" setting.
The jumper is on the drive and not the case.

Notebook drives would be a 2.5 inch drive. Below i have linked to the two online companies I use and to specifically their 2.5 inch drives.
NewEgg
TigerDirect

well i tried to take the silver case off the hard drive to look for wires to jump and some part fell out. i guess that i just need to accept my loss.

i tried tiger direct but they said they dont have them
new egg is looking for me.

they have some hard drives on ebay however i cannot get the guy to give me any numbers off of the to see if they match. i am guessing that the one on ebay will work but i am not sure.

Rshaffer61, you linked to the wrong drives. We should be looking at ide and not SATA.

IDE drives
