I am tired of WindowsXP and decided to use Linux by Debian. After many tries, I cannot get it to run but there seems to be no way to get it off my computer.
Have you any idea how I can get rid if it?

is this a dual boot system or have you installed debian on its own ?

Hi -it is dual boot. I have not really tried debian because I cannot log in. When I get to the log in page the cursor does not move. I have reinstalled 6 times and end up with the same problem. Rather than try again I just want to get rid of it.
I have Fedora12 live boot which I have tried and it looks good.

Do that you have setup a duel boot. In order to get your hard drive space back you will have to reparition your system. If you like Fedora and still want to learn and give linux a try you can install Fadora over Debian.

When the Windows XP is booted, use the Recovery Console.

You will use the following two commands:

fixboot
fixmbr


The above commands will wipe GRUB/GRUB2 and allow the booting of Windows XP.

Thanks to Daffy - post 5 - but I do not have my original disk with me. I am out of town.
Post #4 did not work as the 'grub' file is hidden somewhere so when I repartioned - my machine would not boot - I do not have my boot disk.

Download rc.iso, which is hosted by a member of GTG, I believe.

Burn it to a CD-R, then set the BIOS to boot from CD/DVD.

Hi - I was able to get debian off my computer and Fedora12 installed. I have not had a chance to become completely familiar with it yet.

As with any Linux distro, there is a learning curve. Glad to hear you're back in action.


If Fedora 12 does not meet your needs, I can highly recommend Linux Mint 8.

Hi Daffy - I looked at Linux Mint 8 web page and screen shots - it looks like it is very much up-to-date and user friendly. I have not gone into Fedora in detail and do not want to get too confused with which Linux to go for. Can I load it over Fedora?

Yes you should be able to install if over Fedora. Just be aware that anything in the partitions you are overwriting will not be saved.

I have installed Linux Mint8 and like most things about it EXCEPT I cannot setup my wireless connection. The manual I downloaded does not seem to cover the setup and in Mint it appears as though only 128 Bit security is allowed and my router does not connect when I change it from 64 bit t0 128 bit.

Any suggestions?
