cursor/text problems

difficult to explain this but here goes......

can type text into address bar and msn messenger but as soon as cursor is moved onto msn home page to enter text into search box the cursor disappears completely, unable to enter text and after a couple of clicks list or previous entries appear!!!

Its my partners laptop, running XP....only thing I can think of is that he recently installed IE8 which seemed to cause probs so uninstalled it and went back to IE7, only since then had this problem.
