Lockup/random restarts

As stated in the topics title, I keep getting random restarts and lockups. I have replaced the RAM, HDD, OS, and graphics card already, removed all but the bare minimum parts needed to run the computer, updated the BIOS, and STILL suffer from the aforementioned problems. The only things I can't replace (due to lack of funds) is the PSU and the mainboard itself, but it has to be one of those causing this. Any ideas on how to figure out which is the culprit? I used CPUID's CPU-Z program to pull this information if it will help.
EDIT: Before I replaced the RAM and HDD, the restarts/lockups were VERY frequent in occurrence (sometimes around every 5 minutes), now its only a few times a day.

OK lets go and run some logs and see what pops up.

Download BlueScreenView
No installation required.
Double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go Edit>Select All.
Go File>Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

This program checks for any drivers which may have been causing your computer to crash....

Click on the file you just downloaded and run it.
Put a tick in Accept then click on Next
Put a tick in the Don't create a start menu folder then click Next
Put a tick in Create a Desktop Icon then click on Install and make sure there is a tick in Launch Whocrashed before clicking Finish
Click Analyze
It will want to download the Debugger and install it Say Yes
WhoCrashed will create report but you have to scroll down to see it
Copy and paste it into your next reply




Go to Start then to Run
Type in compmgmt.msc and click Enter
On left side click on Disk Management
On right side you will see you hard drive.
Now I need you to take a screenshot and attach it to your next reply. Do the following to take a screenshot while the above is open and showing on your desktop.

To do a screenshot please have click on your Print Screen on your keyboard. It is normally the key above your number pad between the F12 key and the Scroll Lock key
Now go to Start and then to All Programs
Scroll to Accessories and then click on Paint
In the Empty White Area click and hold the CTRL key and then click the V

Download Speedfan (The download link is to the right), and install it. Once it's installed, run the program and post here the information it shows.
The information I want you to post is the stuff that is circled in the example picture I have attached.
To make sure we are getting all the correct information it would help us if you were to attach a screenshot like the one below of your Speedfan results.

OK this is not going to be a easy one for sure.
Lets start with some diagnostics and see if the culprit will show itself.

Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech....ay.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, unfortunately, you're out of luck, because Toshiba doesn't provide any diagnostic tool.

After this is done then proceed to the next step. Let me know what the results were.

If you have more than one RAM module installed, try starting computer with one RAM stick at a time.

NOTE Keep in mind, the manual check listed above is always superior to the software check, listed below. DO NOT proceed with memtest, if you can go with option A

B. If you have only one RAM stick installed...
...run memtest...

1. Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)
2. Unzip downloaded memtest86+-2.11.iso.zip file.
3. Inside, you'll find memtest86+-2.11.iso file.
4. Download, and install ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/
5. Insert blank CD into your CD drive.
6. Open ImgBurn, and click on Write image file to disc
7. Click on Browse for a file... icon:

8. Locate memtest86+-2.11.iso file, and click Open button.
9. Click on ImgBurn green arrow to start burning bootable memtest86 CD:

10. Once the CD is created, boot from it, and memtest will automatically start to run. You may have to change the boot sequence in your BIOS to make it work right.

To change Boot Sequence in your BIOS
Reboot the system and at the first post screen (where it is counting up memory) start tapping the DEL button
This will enter you into the Bios\Cmos area.
Find the Advanced area and click Enter
Look for Boot Sequence or Boot Options and highlight that click Enter
Now highlight the first drive and follow the directions on the bottom of the screen on how to modify it and change it to CDrom.
Change the second drive to the C or Main Drive
Once that is done then click F10 to Save and Exit
You will prompted to enter Y to verify Save and Exit. Click Y and the system will now reboot with the new settings.


The running program will look something like this depending on the size and number of ram modules installed:

It's recommended to run 5-6 passes. Each pass contains very same 8 tests.

This will show the progress of the test. It can take a while. Be patient, or leave it running overnight.

The most important item here is the errors line. If you see ANY errors, even one, most likely, you have bad RAM.

Honestly, I don't think the RAM or HDD are the issue. They are both brand new, and the system was doing this before I purchased them. In fact, its the reason I purchased them. However, I will run the tests anyway. Hard drive passed with flying colors on the basic, locked up during the advanced test. Rerunning it now. (EDIT: Passed advanced test with flying colors as well.) Ram is going to take a while since I have 2 sticks to test. Will add those results once they finish, and it will probably be tomorrow.

If it will help narrow down what else to test, I replaced the HDD (now using a SATA drive instead of IDE) and OS (windows 7 instead of windows XP 64 bit, and yes it was a clean install of windows 7), RAM (now using 2x 2GB sticks instead of 1x 1GB stick), and graphics card (GeForce 9500 GT instead of Radeon X1600 or X1650 Pro). The power supply that was in the problematic PC is now in the one I am currently using and vice versa. PSU now in the trouble PC is an Echostar 580W unit and was swapped AFTER the troubles started. I have removed all optional things except for one additional fan that is positioned below the graphics card to help cool it.

So the other system was having trouble and you replaced the PSU and now no more trouble with it?
Now that PSU is in the system we are diagnosing and it is having problems?
Can you egt me the Speedfan picture from post 3?
I'm looking at voltages more then temps.

To answer your question, no the same computer is still having the same problems. The other computer (the one I am currently using) works perfectly fine after switching power supplies. The power supply that was in the computer experiencing the problems was a generic 480W power supply and is now in the computer I am using to respond to this topic. If this will make it simpler, the computer experiencing troubles is computer 1, and the one I am using to respond with is computer 2. The power supply that came with computer 1 (generic 480W) is now in computer 2 and the Echostar 580W is now in computer 1. Computer 2 never had and is not currently experiencing these problems, so the power supplies aren't bad.

I am currently running the memtest on the RAM, already locked up during it once.
I am starting to suspect the motherboard is going or has gone bad. It stated an HDD error this most recent boot on the POST screen shortly after the RAM detection occurred.

As for the picture you are asking about, can you not access the link to it that I posted or do I need to edit it so it will fit as an attachment?

Yes the pictures were fine and showed nothing abnormal.
I do agree with your assessment of a possible motherboard issue but i would like to see the results of memtest if possible before saying for sure.
Other then a overheating problem which is not shown from your speedfan I would have to say either memory or the motherboard is your culprit.
Since the issue was happening before the new memory then now we are down to a motherboard or cpu being the issue.

Go to
Start and then to Run
Type in Chkdsk /r Note the space between k and /
Click Enter ...It will probably ask if you want to do this on the next reboot...click Y
If the window doesn't shutdown on its own then reboot the system manually. On reboot the system will start the chkdsk operation
This one will take longer then chkdsk /f

Note... there are 5 stages...
It may appear to hang at a certain percent for a hour or more or even back up and go over the same area...this is normal...
DO NOT SHUT YOUR COMPUTER DOWN WHILE CHKDSK IS RUNNING OR YOU CAN HAVE SEVERE PROBLEMS
This can take several hours to complete.
When completed it will boot the system back into windows.

Let me know if this fixes the problem

I don't think it will solve the problem as I have run chkdsk in the past with no results, not to mention it does this no matter which HDD (IDE w/Windows XP 64 bit or SATA w/Windows 7) I use. Also the computer DOES lockup when not running Windows (i.e. booted from the memtest cd). I will run it anyway, but only after I ask this one question: If it does get interrupted, do I risk permanent physical damage to the HDD? I don't want to try and get an RMA on the drive and then risk being out of luck and stuck with a damaged drive.

thanks for the help, but I think I have finally figured out whats bad in my system. While trying to boot it, it wouldn't boot unless I reconnected the IDE drive, which it was booting without it in the past for 2 weeks. The BIOS wasn't even showing the SATA drive until I reconnected the IDE drive and rebooted. I think its safe to say its the motherboard thats bad. Do you agree?

If your main drive is IDE then that would make sense but sense you said it has been booting without it then I'm not sure what the problem is. Might be a low cmos battery or bad motherboard.
