How to Connect My laptop To my tv using VGA connections

I used to be able to connect my laptop to my tv simply and it worked fine.

But now when I connect it my laptop goes black and my tv says not supported?

I use a windows vista home edition if that helps at all.

I've been trying for ages to get it working, nothing has worked, HELP!
