Notebook specs

My son's birthday is coming up and I have been offered the chance of a notebook laptop for him to use for surfing the web and chatting to his friends on live messenger. The machine has a 2Gb hard drive and only 128mb of ram my question is would the notebook be good enough for my son to use for the decribed intentions?

How old is this laptop?! The last hard drive I saw under 10GB was 10 years ago.. are you sure?

A laptop with this small amount of space, and this small amount of memory may not hold an operating system worthy of surfing the web.. other than small versions of linux. Do you currently have the laptop? I could ask you to run some spec grabbing software
