I suspect you were a bit heavy handed with stripping out the registry keys! You may have removed some of the ones pertaining to the parallel port as well as the printer.
You could either try running the recovery/repair utility (boot from XP CD & enter R when prompted) or you could.....buy a pen!

When you said the re-install of the XP driver didnea work like, did you get any error messages a bit more specific than 'error printing'?

It sounds like it may be a communications error. I assume this is a parallel printer (correct me if it's USB). What are the parallel port settings? ie SPP/ECP/EPP and IRQ etc. Is bi-directional communication enabled?

Have you tried printing a self-test page directly from the printer? This should eliminate whether the printer itself is playing up.

printer works fine on another machine
// port is ecp
i gave up trying to fix it ... shared it from another machine and it works fine that way so it definatley points to "driver/port" issue ( other printer works on same port with same cable ). Its not that interesting an issue to continue pushing for a resolution when it works the way i have it now.

Have to thank you for all your help and suggestions, and i will one day.
