Hello,
As you may know from previous posts, I have had a msn error message involving oleaut.dll files for a long time. I've reported it to Microsoft and one day while reporting it took me to a link which said that Microsoft had no known fix for this problem, but it recommended updating to direct X 9. So I thought about it for awhile, and decided that I would update to direct X 9.
I did this Wednesday and everything was ok with the computer, and last night I started getting this error message.
Buffer overrun detected!
C:\\Program files internet explorer\IExplore.exe
A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the programs internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must now be terminated.

I can get online with MSN for awhile and then I might get this message. I cannot even get into IE explorer 6. I tried using goback but it wouldn't let me goback that far in the past in case direct X 6 is causing all of this. I redownloaded Internet Explorer and re-installed it with no good result.

Short of reformatting the hard drive, is there anything else I can do? <_<

I should add that this error message is in Microsof Visual C++ Runtime library

Also, an update. I ran direct X diagnostic tool and found that the hardware accelerated direct 3D9 is not available because the display driver does not support it. You may be able to get a newer driver from the hardware manufacturer.

Ok, I went to gateway's download site and no help there with the video driver update. My video card is a 3dfx voodoo 3. The maine driver is a 3dfx16V3.drv. version 4.11.0001.7125

I have never installed a new driver and don't know if you have to uninstall the previous driver. Matter of fact, I don't know how to find the driver update.

Deborah :D

Just thought I'd post an update. I had to hire a computer expert. He reformated my hard drive, put my stuff back on and I still had the buffer overrun error. It's an issue with IE 6.1 and 6.2 and they had to custom write me a program to get it working again. It's been reported to microsoft, but i'm sure they don't give a rat's behind about supporting windows 98. <_<
