Also--I've twice run the VX2 cleaner suggested above, but both times it reports that my computer is not infected--however, it looks like my scan is showing that I am indeed infected. Ideas?

Thanks again--and sorry for the confusion of a triple-post morning!

No worry Julie,

Please go Here and unzip the newest version of HJT into a new dedicated folder,
Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it hjt. Unzip HijackThis into this folder. Launch Hijack This, then press Scan, and press Save Log
This will generate a text file that will list all running processes, all applications that are loaded automatically when you start Windows, and more.
Most things are harmless and needed so don't make any changes.
post a log here please.

OK Julie, Lets see if we can get this for you,
Might be a good idea to print out these instructions or save them to notepad so you have them available,

First,

Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the services called:

System Startup Service

or

SvcProc

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok.

Next]/b]
First:
Download AboutBuster
Then Unzip it to your desktop.. “Don’t run it yet”
Check it for updates if any are found please download them then close out the program

Download and install Cleanup

Also
Dowload the following program
CWShredder
It should be the current version, but check for updates
“Don’t run it yet”

Please download and install Ad-aware.
Setting up Ad-aware- please make sure you update it first

Download and unzip cwsserviceremove to your desktop from the link below:
cwsserviceremove.zip (save this to your desk top don’t do anything with it till told to do so)

Next
Go to process manger and end the following process

[b]Next,
. Reboot into SAFE MODE
Please restart HJT put a check next to the following if they still exist, close all open windows and click “fix.checked”
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\pfavh.dll/sp.html#44768

When I was following your directions for the HJT/fix.checked part, I noticed a lot of similar topics that weren't identical to the ones that you had flagged:

for instance the O15 trusted zones--I only fixed the ones that were identical, but I can't imagine my computer needs to be running anything called "crazywinnings."

Thanks for all your continued help, can't tell you how much I appreciate it!

Please follow the instructions located in Step Five: Posting a Hijack This Log. Post your HJT log as a reply to this thread, which has been relocated to the Malware Removal Forum for providing you with further assistance.

Kindly note that it is very busy in the Malware Removal Forum, so there may be a delay in receiving a reply. Please also note that HJT logfiles are reviewed on a first come/first served basis.

Hi julie,

Lets get the rest of this cleaned up for you,

for instance the O15 trusted zones--I only fixed the ones that were identical, but I can't imagine my computer needs to be running anything called "crazywinnings."

Correct lets get that cleared up,

Download the DelDomains zip file and unzip it to your desktop.

DelDomains

Right-click on the deldomains.inf file and select 'Install'

Next

Please restart HJT put a check next to the following, close all open windows and click “Fix Checked”

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\pfavh.dll/sp.html#44768
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\pfavh.dll/sp.html#44768
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = about:blank
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

Reboot your computer.

Next

Please run these two online scans. Make sure they are set to clean automatically:

TrendMicro's HouseCall
ActiveScan

You should try to delete any files that these scanners are unable to clean. Make sure you check the 'Disinfect automatically' option in Active scan, and check the “Auto Clean” option in TrendMicro, Then let us know if its working better and what the scans found.

Then scan again with HijackThis and post another log.
