mouse trouble

I'm having trouble with operation of my mouse. As often as not, when I left click, nothing happens until I repeat the command. I don't know if this is a mechanical problem with the mouse hardware (e.g., switch not making contact) or some software glitch. Any suggestions?

easy way to see if it's hardware would be to use a different mouse on the computer and see if the problem persists, to be double sure use the current mouse on a different computer if the problem shows up there too then it's definitely hardware.
