Hi guys,

First of all, my thanks to the tech support guys who've helped me here :)

Now, my problem is non-malware related for once.

I've wanted to restore some basic system files. However, I don't have the install disks as I didn't install the software on this computer (distant cousin did). I found out that you can bypass this by running the computer from the winnt32.exe file, which is in i386. I've looked in both i386 folders that contain thousands of files and IT'S NOT THERE!

So, is there any way I can retrieve it somehow? (I need it to have autochk.exe again, besides other things... I accidentally deleted autochk, it seems.) I look at kellys-korner briefly but nothing there that could solve the problem.

Many thanks!

Have you tried to restore the computer to a date before you deleted the files?

Hmm... I don't even have a rough estimation of when it could have been deleted. I've never even known about it before; I only found out about it when I was trying to restore some windows applications such as Character Map etc... that got deleted when I was trying to install Fax/Mail properties.

So, I don't think a System Restore would work as it would be too far back.

One quick thing, do I need a winnt.exe file to work with this? And, which i386 folder do I mount it in?
Sorry to be a pain, but you do a grand job :) Thank you!!!

These are the i386 folders
Program Files x2
WINDOWS x2
One is WINDOWS\system32\spool\XPSEP\i386

I don't know what procedure you're referring to and what's wrong with your computer.
You simply asked for a file.
