What do you mean by 'it shows up as working'? Do you mean it's visible in windows in My Computer or do you just mean the light on the front of the CD drive comes on?

both. it shows up in my computer and the light comes on for about ten seconds like its reading but nothing happens. I checked in device mngr and it says it is working but all I hear running is the floppy. I tried to put the cd for win me in but all it tried to do was read the floppy it kept saying please insert floppy. I know it has something to do with the d drive but I dont know how to fix it. I even tried to delete the cdrom from my system so it will reinstall itself but I removed it and when the computer restarted it still showed up as before

When you look in My Computer, does the CDROM drive (with no CD inserted) still have the CDROM icon or does it have the removable disk icon (like the floppy icon)?
Also, does the drive letter assignment ('D' I assume) still appear under the CD icon?
