can not restore ipod nano in itunes

hi i bought an ipod nano pluged it in to start putting some music on it and it told me i needed itunes 9 so i downloaded 9 then i was told that itunes can not reay my ipod please restore from profile page.
tried that and it tells me it can not conect check network settings have been thru all my network settings and found no probles
after running the itune diagnostic this is what i get

Windows Firewall is on.
iTunes is enabled in Windows Firewall.

The network connection timed out.
Connection attempt to iTunes Store was unsuccessful.

Secure connection attempt to iPhone activation server unsuccessful.

iTunes has never successfully accessed iTunes store
can some one help me get this to work please
