Now I have no sound on my laptop. In the device manager the Microsoft Kernel Wave Audio Mixer driver says it's corrupt or missing. Fix one thing and somethings else breaks.

Keep in mind, that sometimes, when your computer was heavily infected, even after removal of all threats, the computer will never be same again. It happens.
Sometimes, fresh install is the best option.

Regarding IE....

Close IE.
Go Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools, and click on Internet Explorer (no add-ons). Same thing?

Some add-on is causing issues.
What version of IE is it?
In IE, go Tools>Internet options>Advanced tab and click "Reset" button.
Restart IE.
Works fine?

It's IE8 that I downloaded earlier when we got the internet connection fixed. I didn't even have a chance to do any addons.

But you said, when started as Internet Explorer (no add-ons), it works.
Reset it and see, if it works.

While I was using IE without addons I was able to download windows updates I couldn't before. IE8 is working good now and I have sound again. Now when I go to windows update again in regular IE8 it wants to install ActiveX which would be the only thing I installed right after installing IE8. Could that be what caused the problem?

I'm not sure. Try to allow it and if you have any problems, reset IE again.
