The master File Table needs at least 10 to 15 percent of the drive free in order to function correctly.
Ideally putting a larger hd in would give you the room and hopefully pickup more speed.
Increasing the Ram Memory would help a lot also but between the two I have suggested you would probably be looking at a couple of hundred dollars and at that point it might be more worth buying a new laptop.
