Ventrilo does not work properly on my laptop

I just bought a new Gateway NV53 laptop and I can't get Ventrilo to transmit correctly. Everyone says I break in and out when I talk. I know my microphone is fine, I've used different microphones and the built in microphone on the laptop (I even checked the external microphones on other computers). I've tried the Windows 7 64-bit version of Ventrilo (my laptop has Windows 7 64-bit) and I tried the 32-bit Windows XP version of Ventrilo. Other people with Windows 7 desktops don't have any problems, so I think this may be a hardware problem since the only other person with this problem also has a laptop with a built in mic. I don't know where to go from here. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated since I've been trying to figure this out for the past three weeks.
