Open Autoruns, click on "Logon" tab, and UN-check:

+ "SunJavaUpdateSched"
+ "Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk"
+ "Google Update

The next file needs to be manually disabled and is only needed if you use multi language on your keyboard. If you do then skip the step.

To turn off just ctfmon.exe go to:

Control Panel then to Regional and Language Options

Click on the Languages Tab then click the Details button

Click on the Advanced tab

Check the box that says Turn off advanced text services option

Click A and then OK

When done restart computer and then:

Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop
  • Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
  • Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
  • Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.

Download Auslogics Defrag from the link in my signature below. Auslogics Defrag in my opinion is better because:
It does a more comprehensive job at Defragging
It will actually show you what it is doing
At the end of working it will show you how much speed you picked up
You can view a online log of the files that Auslogics defragged

How is the internet acting now?
Any redirecting when you click on a site that takes you to something else different?
Is it staying connected now?
Do you have dialup, DSK, cable or satellite?
Are you using a modem or a router?

You should only have one real time av going as well as a firewall.
Running two of either of these will create false positives and slow your system down with scans.
Malwarebytes the free version is not a real time scanner so no problem there.
The recent updates for XP you should try to do as the support for XP will halt in June I believe .

i have been keeping my windows task manager open to see how much cpu usage is taken up when certain things happen.so sometimes my computer will show only 6% usage but my internet will not work for a few minutes.what could be doing that?

Firewall and Avast are two different programs doing different jobs.
You may have a faulty modem or ethernet cable.
Does your Network card show up in Device Manger?

OK two things then. First you need to contact your ISP and have them run a line test including a noise test.
You may have a issue with to much noise or signal drop out.
Second how old is the modem\router you have from your ISP?
I have Comcast and they just in the last month have had to replace my router and send me a new battery for my modem since both showed bad from their end. I was having the same issue with loss of internet and after they tested what I advise above they discovered the problem with the inside equipment.

i just got the service a few months ago.
and the disconnecting just happened again and i reseted the modem and it took a few minutes to load the modem up.all the lights started to get solid except the online one was blinking and then it reset and went back to the first light and did that for a few minutes.then after a few minutes all loaded up and back online.
i am with service electric.

does this sound like a problem with the modem or the isp
