I originally started in malware help for a smitfraud virus, but have found myself in Safe mode with no way back to normal mode. Whenever I try to reboot in normal, my computer shuts off.

I have tried to restore my system to an early date, but this results in a failure. I am interested in saving a couple WORD and EXCELL documents off my computer and then either (a) scrapping my computer or (b) restoring it to factory conditions or © just returning to normal mode.

The A: drive hasn't worked for some time, and I can't get to normal mode so I can just upload the files to a directory.

msconfig
<enter>

On the first screen, choose SELECTIVE STARTUP radio button, then UNCHECK every box below it.

Reboot...will window now start in normal mode?

It now seems to reboot in a mode that looks like SAFE mode; there is still the 16 bit monochrome or whatever, but no startup troubleshooter. It says that I have started in selective startup mode.

It seems we are moving forward.

What is the next step?

that is normal

starting from the bottom. Check LOAD ENV....and reboot.

If it reboots to normal, then check the next one from the bottom, and reboot....keep checking one at a time until the problem recurs, then post back with what you last checked to make it no longer boot in normal mode

I appreciate your clear comments. Sorry for the delay between my posts.

Starting at environmental variables and going upwards, I was able to click Startup Group with no problem, but once I clicked static VxDs, the computer would keep rebooting to the startup screen, if I hit Normal, it would reboot me again to the startup screen.

So, all pretty standard fare-- what is interesting though, is the two antivirus programs....a lot of times, multiple antivirus programs don't play nice together...

So, let's start with that--in safe mode, uninstall both of these programs, then start > run "msconfig

then check NORMAL START UP and reboot.

I don't use wireless. I just have cable (broadband) internet). Should I delete?

AVG Free uninstalled fine.

I can't find a file to uninstall Symantec, and it isn't in the Add/Remove Programs section.

When i try and restart in normal, a black screen appears and reads:

"Symantec AntiVirus Auto-protect is unable to start. Unable to allocate thread data. You may need to reinstall Symantec AntiVirus to correct problem. This is a difficulty because I downloaded it.

Is it safe to simply do a search for Symantec, and then manually delete the files?

leave those files crypto and ipsec...

reboot in safe mode...msconfig, go to vxd tab and uncheck all the symantec files,

reboot...does it all work?

Moved up the list. Computer starts with Win.ini, so it starts in normal. Should I download Symantec so it deletes it or just let the settings in the VDx take care of it?
