windows cannot find nail.exe[RESOLVED]

I use several anti-spam/virus,etc programs (spybot, adaware,MS antispyware,Mailwasher,Trend PC Cillin Internet Security, pop up blocker). I keep my PC clean and free of trouble makers. I also ran Norton Win Doc but no problem showed up that would indicate I had anything wrong. There is nothing in my Task Mgr that should not be there and using regedit, all looks good. I have also checked all programs and there is nothing there that should not be.

I had a problem with Web Search, Aurora and Nail.exe but no longer get any attempts by them. Trend Internet Security stopped them from infecting me with alert box that tell me there was an attempt almost every day but I no longer get any alerts and Trend is up to date. Now everytime I bootup I get this error message ...."Windows cannot find 'C:\Windows\Nail.exe.' Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again". I saw someone else post this same question but have not seen an answer as to how to get rid of this error message. I have searched for nail.exe but its not there. If its not in the PC then why does this error message show up on every bootup?

I am on Comcast HSI and turn PC off at night. I use Win XP and IE 6. I have not modified any programs or added anything new in a long time. Have not downloaded any programs from the Internet

Hi,

That message usually means the "bad" file was deleted but the registry entry was left in place.
So Windows tries to start it everytime.

Post a HijackThis log following directions here:
http://www.geekstogo..._Log-t2852.html

When you run HijackThis you will very likely notice a entry like this:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

That is the cause of the error.

I found the file in Hijack This log that Metallica pointed me to and removed it with Hijack this. Is this all I have to do?

That one would have bee enough to get rid opf the error, but since you posted the log anyway, You have some more to get rid off.

:tazz: This forum is so awesome and I am so grateful for the fast/accurate help. That nail.exe bootup message was maddening! I am good with PCs but not a person who likes to fool with the registry so Hijack This is wonderful!

QED...removed the ones you told me about and rebooted and lookin good!
