Hi All,
Great site! I have recently been getting a Norton 360 popup that trojan.gen was detected but could not be removed. I tried the steps Norton suggested (turning off system restore, running Norton 360 again) with no luck.

Computer is getting very sluggish and now Firefox will not launch. I was able to run all the programs in the Malware removal guide, except for GMER which kept getting me to the Blue Screen of Death with page fault error messages.

Otherwise the logs are as follows:

Any help greatly appreciated!

Hello klaus_teflon and welcome to Geeks to Go! I’ll be happy to look over your log and help you with your issues. It will be very helpful if you follow these guidelines:
  • Malware removal is a sometimes lengthy and tedious process. Please stick with the thread until I’ve given you the “All clear.” Absence of symptoms does not mean your machine is clean!
  • Please do not run any scans or install/uninstall any applications without being directed to do so.
  • Please follow my instructions carefully and in the order they are posted.
  • Any colored text in my posts indicates a clickable link.
  • You should print any instructions I give you for ease of use and reference.
  • If you have any questions at all, please stop and ask before proceeding.
Please be advised, as I am still in training, all my replies to you will be checked for accuracy by one of our experts to ensure that I am giving you the best possible advise. This may cause a delay, but I will do my best to keep it as short as possible.

I will post back as soon as possible with instructions.

klaus_teflon,

Posted Image Please try to run GMER again. Make sure you have all of your security software disabled and all other windows closed. Also uncheck the box beside "files" as well.

If that doesn't work, please try to run it in the safe mode:

Follow these steps to reboot your computer into the Safe Mode:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
  • Press Enter.
Posted Image I see that you may have ran ComboFix earlier. I'd like to see the log. Click Start > Run or press Windows Key + R copy/paste the following into the run box that opens and press OK:
c:\ComboFix.txt

For future reference, unsupervised use of ComboFix is strongly discouraged by the developer.

Posted Image Can you tell me what file(s) Norton is detecting as being infected?

Thanks, I will try GMER again with those steps.

Norton 360 appears to identify the trojan.gen file as:
[denehdf.class]inside of [c:\documents and settings\dave\application data\sun\java\deployment\cache\6.0\35\37e5fd23-2565b6c7]. Not sure how to cut and paste from the Norton 360 so that was hand typed from their Alert Summary Risk Details section.

Posted Image Using Internet Explorer or Firefox, visit Kaspersky Online Scanner

1. Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.

2. To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan. Click HERE to see how to disable the most common antivirus programs.
3. Click Run at the Security prompt.

The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
Please be patient as this can take quite a long time to download.
  • Once the update is complete, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, adware, dialers, and other riskware
    • Archives
    • E-mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View report... at the bottom.
  • Click the Save report... button.

klaus_teflon,

Let's take care of those Kaspersky detections, then it looks like your PC is clean!

Posted Image Run OTL.exe
  • Copy/paste the following text written inside of the code box into the Custom Scans/Fixes box located at the bottom of OTL

    :Files
    C:\webster pc\downloads3\dvdpla\setup.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\v83vg29i.ini

    :Commands
    [emptytemp]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, it will reboot when it is done and produce a log
Next, we have some important cleanup and housekeeping to take care of:

Posted Image P2P - I see you have P2P software (BitComet) installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to malware infections. Malware authors use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares. I would strongly recommend that you uninstall these now. You can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.

Posted Image Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 19. The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications."
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: " I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 with JavaFX License Agreement". Click on Continue. The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Now go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE or Java™ 6) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u19-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
  • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
Applications and AppletsTrace and Log Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.
Posted Image Uninstall ComboFix
  • Press the Windows key + R on your keyboard or click Start -> Run. Copy and past the following text into the run box that opens:
    Combofix /Uninstall
Posted Image

Posted Image Clean up with OTL:
  • Double-click OTL.exe to start the program.
  • Close all other programs apart from OTL as this step will require a reboot
  • On the OTL main screen, press the CLEANUP button
  • Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.
  • Manually delete any remaining logs or tools.
Posted Image Finally, I'd like to make a couple of suggestions to help you stay clean in the future:
  • Restart any anti-malware programs that we disabled while we were cleaning your machine.
  • Keep your antivirus application current and updated. Also, hang on to MBAM. Scan with them at least weekly.
  • Avoid using P2P programs, cracks and keygens!
  • Consider running in a limited user account. See this post for more information.
  • Please carefully review the information in our Preventing Malware and Safe Computing thread located HERE
Please post once more so I know you are all set and I can close this thread. Good luck and stay safe!

Thanks-- I tried all the steps above and everything has seemed to help, but I still get the same Norton 360 Trojan.gen popup. It has detected it but can't remove it.

When I go into Norton 360 Security History it has listed a few files for this trojan.gen (one of which I posted earlier, another is this one from way back on 3/13: [ssg keygen.exe] inside of [c:\program files\bitcomet\downloads\avg antivirus+firewall & anti-spyware [ava internet security].zip]. I can't find anything more recent, but I'm not super familiar with Norton 360 and how it stores the info. Hope this helps!

klaus_teflon,

I'm not familiar enough with Norton 360 to be able to help you. The first file you said it detected was no longer on your system. Even if it were, clearing your Java cache as I instructed would have removed it. The other file in Norton's history should have been detected by MBAM and/or Kaspersky if it were still there. Can you navigate to that folder and check? If it is there, delete it manually.

It looks like Norton 360 recently released a new version (4). If you don't have that version you could try to uninstall your current version and install the latest. You may also try Norton's Support Page.

Hi RPMcMurphy,

Thanks,
As usual, great advice. That last step (and I'm sure all the other things we did) finally fixed it, it seems-- no more Norton 360 trojan.gen popup.

As far as going forward, keeping and running MBAM, any tips on how often and what settings to run that on?

Also, through this whole situation I have installed Spybot S&D, Ad-aware, Super-Antispyware just in case they might help. Is it worthwhile keeping them/keeping them running, along with Norton 360?

Thanks again-- amazing job!

klaus_teflon,

You're welcome! Keeping all of those programs is probably a little overkill, but shouldn't hurt as long as you only use them on demand. I'd Definitely hang on to Malwarebytes and maybe one of the others. The default settings should be fine and I'd scan at least once a week with them.
