Hi Ron :) ,
Still with me???

Got my new tower and am now trying
to get it all set up.
As you can see, I am up and running.
I need anti-virus and firewall programs
and wanted to make sure that you think
Avast and ... sheesh .. can't remember the firewall
I was using :) . Anyway, wanted to get your council
before proceeding. Would you mind advising me
so that I can get this done right?

Thanx a mil
Susan

Avast for antivirus
Malwarebytes for malware
Superantispyware for spyware
You can use windows own firewall if you want or Comodo. If you use comodo make sure to disable windows firewall.

Thanks Ron,
I've done everything but the firewall.
I don't think Windows firewall is active
(but I'm not sure).
I don't even know how to find it, nevermind
set it up.I was running comodo
but it really doesn't matter to me. I just want
to use whatever is best.

Which do you recommend? If it's Windows Firewall,
could you tell me how to set it up?

So glad you're my computer guru'!!! :)

I've never used Comodo but after talking at great length with the other techs i am completely convinced i is better then windows firewall.
I would suggest using it instead of Windows.
Hows the system running since it has been over a week since we got the issue resolved?

OK Ron, Comodo it is. Thanks.

The system .... Well ..
1. The tower (if you can call it a tower) is very
small (3 1/2" high X 10" wide X 10" deep) and leaves
no room to add anything else.(one available slot
for the extra RAM I'm getting but that's it).
2. The CD burner is ...uh ...
when you open it ....it considers opening but only
opens a little so I have to pull it opened the rest
of the way. Clearly this is not a good as the CD
burner I already had. I cannot put the old one in
the new unit because it won't fit. I probably could
hook it up externally.

3. How's it running? Definitely no complaints. Downloads
are faster .... internet connection better ... So far,
it's all good. Of course, I don't have anything on it
yet. Until a few minutes ago I didn't even have Microsoft
Word or Adobe Flash. That's how bare bones it is at the moment.
Any thoughts? :)
How do I make sure that Windows firewall is disabled?
Don't want to install Comodo until I'm sure.
Thank you, my friend
Susan

I'm not a fan of those slimline cases just for the reason you mentioned. No room for expansion in it.
The cdrom should be able to be replaced for about 30.00 USD from either TigerDirect or Newegg.
System sounds like it is running great and thats what I was hoping for.
If you can provide a picture or the model of the system I can do some further investigating on a replacement cdrom drive.

Wow .....that was fast !!!
It's a Dell, Ron.
Model No.:DCTR .....does that help?
Don't worry about the CD Recorder. This one
works :) it's just cheap :)

About the firewall ? How can I tell if Windows
Firewall is disabled so I can install Comodo? :)

To disable Windows Firewall, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type Firewall.cpl, and then click OK.
2. On the General tab, click Off (not recommended).
3. Click OK.

OK ..got my Avast and Comodo running.
Ahhh .. I feel much better now, don't you? :)

Not sure what else I'm supposed to do .. if anything.
Soon I'll try to recover my old data. Is this something
you could walk me through, or do you suggest I have it
done for me? I've heard Best Buy does it for $99. whereas, the
local computer tech says $250.

On to another subject.... We have another computer ..
this one is Win98. I don't use it but my husband does every day. It runs really crummy. I'm positive it
needs simple maintenance stuff to just get it running
smoothly. BUT ... I'd really like to change the operating system to WinXP. The only WinXP disk I have is the one that
came with this new refurbished computer of mine, and the disk says "for refurbished..." yadda yadda.
We're going to use the tower, motherboard and CD writer from my now crashed computer and just add the harddrive from his to it(are you following all this? :) )
Here's the thing .....
I'm not very familiar with that other computer, however, I'd
very much like to get it running properly.
As you know ... I can follow directions. Is that something you would be willing to help with?

Thanks so much Ron

I can't remember where we were at on the other computer before "total system meltdown".
If the hard drive is mechanically sound then there are a couple options.
Option 1 is to slave it to your "new" computer. But as you indicated there might not be room to do this.
Option 2 is to buy a external USB enclosure and put the drive in that. You then plug it in to another computer.

Your windows 98 computer as it stands is to old for XP. It won't be able to handle it.
You also can not use the XP cd from your new computer. That is illegal.
The hard drive is most likely a 10 or 20gb drive. Very small by todays standards.
You would need to buy a XP operating system cd.

We can try and clean it up a little. That would require us looking to be sure the programs we use can be used on 98 system.
You could also try a linux OS on the old unit. There are some that would work really well, but would take some getting used to.
The linux is whats called open source so they are free to download. Some will operate in memory from the CD and not have to be installed so you can try first.

123Runner is correct as I think a Linux Live cd will help the best.
As for the 98 system most of our tools should work on it and if not we can always use the built in programs to do some of the work for us.

Ron and Paul .. u 2 are the greatest ! thanks so very much for your time on all of this.

Still waiting for adapters for this new unit. Until then I'm sort of stalled. Should be here in another few days.

The 98 .... OK ...lots of great information from you two.
I'm all for working with what we have and seeing if we can get it running better. I wouldn't be surprised if it ......no no no .... I can't say it out loud :) .... wouldn't want to make something happen :)
He's getting a lot of Windows Protection Faults on boot and sometimes won't boot except in safe mode .... I KNOW .... don't say it ....don't say it ....
I'm just going to pretend you two didn't just think that ! :)

I'll be in touch just as soon as my adapters show up !
Thanks Guys !!! :)
