Hello

On attempting to dial onto the Internet, I received the following message: 'the port the modem is using is currently open by another application. Exit any application that may currently be using the port.'

The following is a list of the Drivers I had before doing what is mentioned next:

\intel C51.sys

\intel C53.sys

\modem.sys

\mohfilt.sys

And it shows I have Intel ® 537EP V(X DFV PCI Modem

I went to Microsoft.com. There I received the following instructions to resolve this problem:

1. In safe mode, remove all the modem drivers, and then restart the computer.

Windows will redetect the modem.
2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
3. Click Add or Remove Programs.
4. Click the incompatible software, for example, Palm Desktop and Synchronization Software.
5. Click Change/Remove, and then follow the steps to remove the software.

I did this.

Then I restarted back to normal mode, On start up, I see 'Found New Hardware, PCI Modem. Then I get a message: Found New Hardware Wizard. I click 'next', with a check mark next to the 'install the software automatically (recommended).'

The next message window I get reads: It is recommended that you connect to the Internet so that the wizard can search online and look for the appropriate software'.

I put a check in the box: 'Yes, connect and search for the software on the Internet. However, I am unable to get on the Internet because I don't have any modem drivers, since I removed them.

Thanks for any help you could send my way.

I thought I read by following the instructions by Microsoft, my Operating System would have automatically reinstalled drivers for modem. However, that obviously didn't happen.

Further, I did go to Add / Remove Programs. But I don't know what program to remove. Could you help me with this also. I don't have Palm Desktop or Synchronization Software.

I don't have the XP Home Edition disk. Is there another way I can fix this without that disk? I could go online with the computer I am using now and search for Drivers. But which Driver would I want in the list I provided?

Here is the link to the driver, download it to a USB flash drive, put that your computer and then click Update Driver on System, Hardware, Device Manager and instead of selecting automatic, select Have Disk. Point the driver search to the flash pen, opening the files in the flash pen. Click OK and it will install that driver.
This is exactly the same as you could have done, when you say I cannot go on the internet, clearly you can, as you have posted here, but not on the computer that has no driver for the modem.

Macboatmaster,I have the file downloaded to my USB

I start at Device Manager > PCI Modem. I right click it and click "update driver". This
takes me to the Hardware Update Wizard.

There, I select "Install from a list or specific locations (advanced).

Next screen reads. Please choose your search and installation options. Here, I put a check in
"Include this location in the search:"

When I attempt to Browse for the updated driver file, I am unable to see the file in the
list of files on my USB, drive E.

So, I tried typing the path in the window under "Include this location in the search:" the
following: E:\Modem_Intel_XP_32_2.15.57.4. Then I click 'next".

Then the following message shows:

"The location you specified does not exist or cannot be reached. Please enter another location or uncheck the 'Include this location in the search' box."

Did I attempt to do this as you said?

Do you have any other ideas as to how I can get the driver from my E drive to be updated?

After inserting the USB flash pen, open that in My Computer, establish a folder in the main hard drive, say in Programs, Accessories - Modem Driver copy the files from the USB to that folder.
Now go back to where you were on Update driver and select that folder.
Go from there. You may have to select the appropriate file in that folder.

The problem was I did not open the driver download to expose the several files there. I was just pointing to the downloaded file in the Wizard.

When the thought occurred to me that I should double click the driver download file to show all the files there, then point to the path those several files were located, the driver was updated.

Macboatmaster, well I thought that was the end of it.

However, as soon as I rebooted, I am getting message 633 again whne i attempt to dial onto the Internet.

Error 633: The modem (or other connecting device) is already in use or is not configured properly.

Hate to ask you for more help but do you have any other suggestions?

Other than rebooting, I have done only 2 other things.

The first thing I did was go back to pc pit stop and download a scan to see if there were any other drivers I needed. The only one it indicated I needed was a updated driver for Network Adapter.

Second thing I did was to hook up my new monitor. It came with a CD but wouldn't you know the DVD/CD drive doesn't work now. I put a DVD in the drive and it doesn't play. I will take care of this. I am only mentioning this because I just wanted you to know what else I have done and what is happening, since I last installed the drivers for the PCI modem.

Would you suggest performing the updated installation of the new drivers again? I am not seeing any yellow question marks in Device Manager for any device.

Hardware Check the use of the modem on ports and IRQ
Components - Modem and Problem Devices - check here also
See what else is using the same resources as the modem.
Then see if that device can be disabled.
For instance if the same Port or IRQ happens to be the sound card (unlikely, but an example then disable that. By disable, I do NOT mean uninstall. Go to Device manager, double click the device and then at the bottom of the window will be a choice to disable.
Try that. I think it is a clash with resources.
If that provides a solution you will then have to allocate different resources to one of the devices.

Macboatmaster, below is my computer information. Rather than to pick what I thought you might need to look at, I copied all of it.

Modem is on IRQ 22; It is on COM 3 & COM 4. Now, where I saw it was on COM 4 also, I will have to get back with you. But I really think I did see it.

Under Problem Devices, the area is blank, with nothing listed. That's good.

Macboatermaster, somehow when I transferred the System Information for modem and IRQ from the PC we are trying to fix to my laptop, so I could place that information in word processor format to copy and paste and send you, the system information was for my laptop. Sorry, for the mistake. But really don't know how that happened.

Macboatmaster, I hope you read this post before spending your time with the other 2 I sent.

Good news! I think I have found the problem.

I downloaded to my USB TFC (Temp File Cleaner) and installed on problem computer. Ran this program. There were 63MB of temporary files in there.

Dial up to the Internet after I did this and was successful. No more error 633. However, when I get off the Internet and try to dial back on again. Then 633 message shows. So, I have to run TFC again.

I have anti-virus program AVG presently. However, the same thing is happening with it. Each time I go on the Internet, AVG shows it is up-to-date and ok. When I get off the Internet, Resident Shield shows it is not active.
