ok, i have a cruzer mini 256 mb flash drive, and i am tryign to get alinux program that will work off the boot on it. I will be running it on an old ibm thinkpad latpot. I have tried linux slax, but it would not boot from the flas drive :) , but it would boot from the cd ;) anywho running it off of a cd is way to slow for me, so do you know of any linux i can downlaod that will work from the boot from a flash drive, and is fairly simple to get running (i am not a computer tech)

;) :) :) :) :yeah:  :woot:  :D :) :) :)

thanks in advanced! :tazz:

If the bios on your computer supports booting from usb just put that option before booting from hd and it should be up and running with just a reboot. If your bios doesn't support that (like my old box) you can boot with a cd. Reboot with a dsl-cd and issue following from the commandline that will appear: dsl fromhd=/dev/sda1 qemu frugal xsetup and then just follow the onscreen prompts about your hardware. Your device might be recognized as something else than /dev/sda1, but usually this is the right option. So hope all works out

i fhat doesn't work let me know

then why not just install DSL to the Hard drive?

to acces the Bios, restart the computer as its starting it will show down at the bottom how to access the bios, usually its the delete key or one of the F keys. that will be on the same page that shows what brand Bios you have. (i.E. Award Bios, Pheonix technologies etc..)

Hope this helps

linux isn't like windows, it doesn't generally require a lot of memory, it uses part of the Hard drive as a virutal memory, called a swap partition. most of hte distros out there use 128mb of ram, total. as with any system the more ram the faster.

Ho wmuch memory do you have on that laptop?

since you dont' have windows or anything on it, you will have to look in your manual unless you have added some memory.

well on the home page for dsl, thsiis what it says.

Run light enough to power a 486DX with 16MB of Ram

based on that info, you can install dsl onto the HDD of that laptop and should be able to run it as the primary OS.

The only other suggestion would be to add Memory to your laptop. its fairly inexpensive and easy to install.

another place to look fo rhelp on dsl is their forums.
