Pawanhammers-

As far as backups goes, I suggest just transferring the data to another hard disk via a USB flash drive. They're cheap, portable, and no true geek should ever be without one.

And yes, the latest edition of Ubuntu is being released later this month. Testing the Beta has been very exciting. :) Ubuntu has an update feature similar to Windows Update that will install the latest data releases and bug fixes. This feature will also upgrade your OS to the latest stable release, so if you install 9.10 now, you will be able to upgrade to 10.04 LTS when it comes out. It's your choice, and it's really six-of-one which option you go with. :)

I have not installed it yet. I'm still considering putting it on my other computer. On my other computer the 40GB is 2 partitions. One is 13GB and one is about 25GB. The 25GB is the C drive and the 13GB is the D drive. So would it be possible if I kept Windows on the C drive, ( because I have 9 GB's left and thats enough for me ) and put Ubuntu on the D Drive and theres nothing important on the D drive. Its says on the CD case that Ubuntu takes up 4GB. And 9 GB of space is enough for me. So do you think can install it in my computer with a 40GB drive?

Also, I just noticed I can install Ubuntu like any other program. Do you know how much space this will take up ? And can I put the program on the D Drive?

Yes, I think it's possible. If the file system is NTFS, I would just caution against filling up the drive too much. Over 85% can lead to bad things... so I've heard. I'm a minimalist so I wouldn't know :)

And I think the program you are referring to is Wubi. Wubi is installed in Windows- it's an executable installer that you download, and the Ubuntu OS is installed inside Windows. It still gives you full Ubuntu functionality and dual-boot options, except that it's installed inside Windows. So that program would go on whatever partition your Windows OS is located (C:, I'm assuming). Keep in mind that's going to add a lot of data to that drive, and it will leave your D: drive empty.

Pawanhammers:

Note:this assumes no Windows system or boot files are present on D:\

It's hard to say one way or the other, so it's important that you backup your data first off.

Use Disk Management within Windows XP to leave the 13GB as Unpartitioned Space, then boot from the Ubuntu CD. When the partitioner comes up, choose 'use the largest continuous free space' and go from there. It's faster in operation than either the Wubi or Live CD options.

My friend has ubuntu 9.10 and made it look like a Mac. By using a Mac theme for ubuntu, do you know how to do that?

In Ubuntu: System|Administration|USB Startup Disk Creator

As always, backup your data, as the utility will format the USB stick.
