Hi. any thoughts or advice is appreciated.

I had to replace a mother board in a dell 630i.
with vista home premium.
The problem I am having is after I install nvidia drivers for the video card
vista hangs on startup to black screen rite after green bars go by.
I can boot into safe mode.
If I disable video card in device manager vista starts ok.
vista will not start in diagnostic start up.
or low resolution.in safe mode

The chipset on the new board is nvidia 750i sli
The reason I mention this is because I have put the video card in another computer
with the same chipset and vista, the same thing happend?

Then I put it into another computer with a different chipset and the nvidia drivers loaded fine and it works.

I have tryed clean installs of vista with and without service packs.
I have tryed different versions of nvidia drivers and chipset drivers for motherboard.
nothing works.
If you can think of something I am missing here I am stumped

p/s so is nvidia I have been emailing there support. These are there products.

Nvidia 750i sli chipset
Nvidia drivers. Figure's they wont work together?

Hello and welcome to Geeks To Go!

Put the video card back into the original computer, and boot into safe mode.

Open Device Manager again and this time instead of disabling the video card, right-click on it and select Uninstall. On the "Confirm Device Uninstall" window that pops up, select Delete the driver software for this device if the option is available. Press OK and reboot the computer into regular mode.

Hopefully you should be able to boot normally, however the screen resolution will be set very low as the default display drivers will be used. Go to Nvidia's website to get the appropriate driver for your video card, here. ( http://www.nvidia.co...81.22_whql.html )

Let us know if you cannot boot into regular mode or if you have problems.

Thanks for the info unfortunately me and nvidia have tryed that.
we tryed installing the driver in safe mode and manual install
after uninstall of drivers.
I did try a clean install of vista to make sure there were no previus drivers.

I did try a start up repair after that said it couldnt fix it.

Nvidia had me install I will try it and let you know.

Just to stress again, after you uninstall in Safe Mode DO NOT attempt to install the driver immediately. REBOOT first into regular mode, and from an Administrator account try the driver installation.

step1. I had to bootinto safe mode to uninstall driver becuase vista wont boot
with the nvidia driver I had installed per nvidia's email instructions.

step2.uninstalled driver and software.from device manager

step3.restarted computer in regular mode. vista installed its default VGA Driver.


step4.Downloaded driver from link to desktop. installed driver.
the driver had me reboot computer.
And vista hangs on black screen after green bars go by.

Dont know I have never seen this before it should be plug n play
Not plug n pray LOL.

any other thoughts.
I ran full diagnostics so thats ruled out.

Have you made sure to plug in the PCIe 6-pin power to the 8800gt? The PCIe power connector is on the rear of the card. You can see a good picture of it on the sixth or seventh image down on the following page: http://www.overclock...review-56k.html

If that is already plugged in, then the only other thing I can think of (beyond the motherboard and the video card being incompatible) is that your power supply is underpowered.

Have you tried putting your 8800 GT into the second PCI-E slot of the motherboard? see if your vista will boot.

It sounds like a motherboard issue.

Hi Yes I have plugged in the 6 pin connecter.
there is a little under 12 volts on all three lines 3 pos 3 negitive.
it is a 750 watt psu. its like 11.9 volts there are two of these connecters
with the same voltage.
This is an asus board with 750i sli chipset.
I have another computer with a new msi mother board with the same chipset the same thing happens on that computer.with vista home premium
I put the card in the computer I am using now with intel g41 chipset and it installed and is working fine.with vista home Basic.

I will try the other socket. I have it in the blue one. closest to chipset and cpu
and it is the primary slot the other slot is black and is the secondary.
According to manual.
I cant find the piece of the puzzle I am missing here but any help is appreciated.

Ok I tryed the other slot vista did start but when I looked in device manager it had an exlamation. then vista said it was installing device driver said it installed
succesfully nvidia 8800gt said I had to restart computer.
Same thing green bars go by hangs on black screen.
the Bios is the latest version
and the latest chipset drivers nvidia had me try that.

If I disable this device vista starts ok. So I am thinking it is a Driver or Resource issue.
I can start in safe mode with this device enabled.
I can not start in diagnostic startup?

any suggestions?

Forgive me if you have already posted this info, but am I correct in assuming that your motherboard is a Dell PP150?

Also, do you know what the amperage over the 12 volt rail is? Or what's the model number of the power supply you are using?

the motherboard was replaced it is an asus p5n-d

the power supply is dell model #h750e-01
as far as the amps power supply it says +12v1/18amp,+12v2/18 amp,+12v3/18amp,
+12v4/18amp.

I used a power supply tester it says 11.8 volts +12v1 -- 11.8 volts +12v2
I know this is not under a load is this ok?

From what I can gather (and anyone else with more knowledge on this subject please feel free to chime in), the Nvidia 8800gt requires somewhere between 22 - 28 amps on the +12v rail, depending on manufacturer. You can get the exact requirement from the manufacturer's page.

Can you try it with another PSU that meets the requirements, maybe the PSU from the computer you mention in post #1 that has functioned correctly with this video card?

I swaped out the power supply same thing is happening.
I used another video card to test pcie slot it worked fine.
The only differnce it is an ati video card without 6 pin power connecter.
