Do you suggest that I open up my laptop and give it a proper going over? As I mentioned before I am a complete girly girl (single with a thing for technically minded men BTW) and have no idea how to do that. Would you suggest I take the laptop to a technician to do the spraying?

Because of it's age, and the fact that we have no idea of the type of environment(s) it has been operating in, yes, I recommend a thorough cleaning ... by someone that knows what they're doing.

If the buildup of dirt/dust is bad enough to cause it to abruptly shutdown due to overheating, no amout of fiddling with software is going to fix the problem.
